And everytime you make a food or grocery purchase with a credit card they know what you are eating, think that isn't buried somewhere in the health care bill?

add the cameras watching on roads, gas stations , stores , banks , parking lots etc . Some say most land line phone calls are routed thru Isreal ( 7out of 8 main frame computers that route our calls are there ) so they can be listened to . Seems they can listen because its not aginst the law there ? All hear say maybe ?

I really do not doubt this but what I find strange is why is this technology not being further used to track, for example a known drug pushers activities, or to locate people with outstanding warrants? Just this week we have a high school student with significant mental illness issues that left her home in Kansas and is supposably heading to California. She has had cell phone contact with one staff person and one other student since she left but the police appear unable to track her, what gives?

guzzi. As I understood it the cell provider was getting the info, not police. When kroger first came out with their stupid card that you have to have to get the sale price a lot of folks were hesitant. Kroger said that there was no info recorded and that they wouldn't know one person from another, a lie. About a month later there was an article in the local paper  where a woman lost her keys and the kroger card  saved her. They knew her name, address, and phon #. Seems that almost every store has one now. Went to sears the other day and they wanted me to sign up for another card, kmart did the same thing. I said NOOOOO, I have too many stupid cards already. How about the lic plate readers ? we have them mounted on cars the sit by the road or cruise parking lots and neighborhoods . There have been sensors on the interstate to record the engine signature of all big trucks and lic # . So now they just need a recording of a truck engine to ID it .

Seems I read somewhere that the technology has been around for several years in private indistry.
It's just that the government has made allowance/funding available for it to trickle down to the local level.

Cell phones and GPS devices are easy trackables. The iphone is the easiest of all. Your credit card purchases are monitored by credit agencies and stores to gather data on what consumers are spending. Insuarance companies use that data for determine lifestyles and risk groups. Yes big brother is watching you and knows whats best for you.
Your newer cars will tell on you also. ONSTAR the operators can listen in on whats said in the car without your knowledge.

Pay cash, and don't use a cell or GPS. Just some food for thought.

Onstar was the start. How many states are wanting gps transponders in ALL vehicles now? I know oregon and washington have had a look at them. Its absolutely sickening. Land of the free?? Ummm yeah.
Safeway stores have the discount card as well. I don't use it. membership stores like costco have the ability to track purchases as well, but I don't know if they do. I do know that if an event that mandates martial law being declared happens, my electronic pocket tumor cell phone is going to be tossed. That way I can't be tracked while...........................................

If you have a smart tag how easy could it be to set up to capture the signal anywhere along a road ?
We had phones that had GPS on them and a program on our computers that would tell us where crews were. Some of the men found out they could cut the GPS feature off on the phone . What they didn't know was it only turned off the feature showing up on their screen . We could still turn it off and on from the computer.

Remember the scandal a few years back when the rental car company was charging people because they were speeding and the computer in the car provided that information.  Man did that set off a furroir.  Today many rental car companies have a tracking device in their cars so they can be recovered if stolen.

Had a friend in Florida use his GPS tracking system to get out of a fine.  Some homeowners were charging him with taking his big work truck home and parking it there over night.  The code enforcement people came to his shop and were going to issue a fine.  He had the that does the GPS tracking send over a report of all the locations his truck had been to in the last two weeks.  They showed his truck had not been near his home during the time.  In other words the neighbors got togeather and lied.  The GPS proved it.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

We had a utility company truck hit one of our trucks. They are a big company with alot of lawyers and in most cases win and don't pay . In this case they said the driver in our truck was speeding and floored it to keep the other truck from comming out into traffic. The truck GPS showed that our truck was going 9 mph under speed limit and did what looked like slamming on brakes . They fixed our truck.

If the girl were to place a call then turn off her cell phone they would have a very hard time to coordinate the signal. Some will even remove the battery to ensure that any electronic trace is not being relayed. Cell phones are great for folks that want to be found. But still far from fool proof from folks that don't. If you are ever injured and lost keep your phone on.

If you have the electronic toll (EZ Pass in NYS) payment system in your state, which is mounted on your car, then you are constantly being tracked. They can tell how fast your going, where you went, etc. The  only way to prevent this is if you remove the tag, and place it in a special "anti-read" bag.

Wrap in alum foil ( they send then to us that way ) EZ pass in Va also and it works in many states .

Standalone GPS Navigation units are one-way communication - even if they weren't they contain no identifying info - you can walk into a store, buy one cash, and walk back out and turn it on.

Other than that, a lot of stuff is likely being tracked, but some of the actions stated here are not taking place.  When you make a credit card purchase, a CATEGORY of merchandise is sent back to the processor.  Not "Bacon, ham, eggs", but rather "groceries, furniture, music".  Naturally extending that to include an itemized list is technically possible, but currently not done.  Also, insurance companies using this data is a popular "What if" scenario proposed, but none of them are currently doing it.

The New I phone app store has you turning on your GPS before you can down load any apps.
My thinking is at some point they are going to sell GPS information to vendors like starbucks and as you are near one your phone will buzz and you will be sent a coupon good for the next 10 to 15 minutes at this or that location.
As for being tracked, sure no matter where you go or what you use some how there is a record of you moving along the roads, your purchases - either credit card or bank card, not to mention the store discount cards all track your movements and purchases.
Even rail passes, subway token purchases, and tolls with easy pass are going to track your movements.
great way to establish an aliby.
On the other hand, use cash that you get for the month, use public transportation, and do not sit next to a window.

Where did you hear that?  I just tested it with an iPhone 4 and had no problem downloading a new app with GPS turned off.

Don't bet the farm on that. The store(s) use just this imfo to set up sales and stock and send it to selected customers instead of a blanket mailing . It is also done in HVAC AND Plumbing service , the list are for sale.

Are we? not likely. Can we? yes.

The price paid for the modern conveniences of cash cards and cellular phones.

If you choose to carry cash for your financial transactions, and shop at locally owned stores you will certainly avoid much of big brothers reach. Toss the cell phone and simply check the answering machine each evening like we did way back 12 years ago... you are once again lost.

Don't bet the farm on that. The store(s) use just this imfo to set up sales and stock and send it to selected customers instead of a blanket mailing . It is also done in HVAC AND Plumbing service , the list are for sale.

The stores typically use the DISCOUNT cards for purchase tracking, not credit/debit cards.  Also, they are not doing specials mailings based on them, nor is any insurance company settings rates based on that data.  Trust me I've got a wallet full and tend to spread around purchases to at least 3 or 4 stores on a regular basis (plus a few more that are more rare visits).  I don't get any flyers even addressed to me.  The only grocery store ads I ever get are the ones that are just blanket mailings to "postal customer".

I don't know anything about Plumbing and HVAC service, but about a year and a half ago I wrote the software interface from Bank of Americas "P-Card" (essentially a company VISA that they make available to their customers) system into our own financial system. Due to us being a government organization (and the potential political embarrassment if the cards were misused) we had specific requests for tracking exactly what was purchased.  I know specifically that we couldn't get itemized lists of exactly what was purchased.  Depending on the level of the merchant handling the transaction they might provide broad categories being purchased (like I said, it could tell if you were buying groceries or music, but not if you had a bag of Oreos in the cart), or if they didn't have the capability to do that then the entire merchant would be classified based on the types of products they sold and anything purchased there would come in under that classification.  About as specific as we could get is we could tell at most of the larger grocery chains (but not necessarily smaller venues like gas stations) if there was an alcohol purchase included and block that.  Not the brand or type though - just that there was alcohol included in the order.

Like I said, this technology is certainly POSSIBLE to extend to that level, but there's a big difference between "Possible" and "It's being done".  Sometimes the level of technophobia displayed is downright depressing ;).

The iPhone is really a SpyPhone.

Apple's iPhones and iPad 3Gs have been secretly recording their owners' movements and keeping a record in a hidden file, it was reported yesterday.

Computer researchers Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden claim the hidden records show the exact geographic locations of the phones, complete with time stamps.

GPS is a fantastic technology. I love it. But people who abuse technology find a lot to love also. The Apple story may have made it to the news, but rest assured that a lot of car companies are building cars with similar features that are not publicized right now.

Government Motors, for example, has On-Star, which can do all that and listen to conversations at the same time.
