20ga slug barrel?
« on: December 26, 2003, 02:15:51 AM »
How have you guys been liking the 20ga slug barrels?  I'm thinking of getting one and was wondering what sabots shoot the best out of these barrels (lightfields, winchester, federal, etc).  I have heard performance on deer have been outstanding, and was wanting to switch from 12ga to 20ga.
Thanks

I think you will find most folks will say it shoots fantastic! One of primary reasons is the barrel posts are dove tailed into barrel which provides extremely strong and stable fit and connection to forearm. I have had one for 2 years and love how it shoots and its maneuverability in a treestand is second to none. Shoots inside 2" at 100 yds with Federal Expander 3/4 oz. sabots. Winchester partition close second. You still have ovevr 1,000 ftlbs at 100 with the Federals so it does the job fine.  Lightfields shot crummy barely hitting paper at 50 yds but I know others are like lasers out of their barrels. Just reminds you to try several brands to be sure. I am starting to reload from Ballistic Products their sabots for the 20 plus the Dangerous game slug. It should be interesting. Buy it and don't look back!

20ga slug barrel?

i dont shoot the TC 20ga but i shoot the NEF Ultraslug in 20ga.i shot 12ga slug guns all my life up till two years ago when i went with a 20ga.no regrets.the 20ga slugs of today are real performers.the one on the lelt is a Fed barnes expander that was recovered from a buck i shot.the Fed slugs are the ones i use.the one in the center is a foster slug and the one on the right is a Lightfield.try the Fed or the hot Win sabot slug with the partition bullet, both are outstanding out of my gun.the lightfield slugs are slow and the wad travels with the slug all the way to the target

i am close to getting a new G2 contender muzzle loader.that is why i am hanging here.good luck

I agree with Muddyboots.  I bought my barrel from Ed about two years ago to hunt with out a ladder stand.  I wanted a shorter easier slug gun to move around in the stand with.  I bought a variety of different slug to shoot in it and see which shot the best.  Winchester, Remington and Barnes all shot acceptable groups.  I went with the Winchester (buying a case)  because the rest of my hunting partners shoot Remington 1100's with a Hastings Barrel and the Hastings folks enclose a warning not to use Remingtons in their barrels.  The Remingtons shot fine in my Encore though and there is no warning on the Encore barrel which seems to be much heavier than the Hastings.  Last year I killed a 8 point with the 20 Winchester slug and could not have been happier with the performance.  I did not hunt with it this year because I killed my Ky buck with a rifle and my Indiana buck with a .357 max contender.  The 20 is a very good tool if you hunt in a slug gun only state.
