« on: April 05, 2011, 01:48:46 PM »
Hi I just posted this in the Predator and Varmint hunting section as well . Hi Guys this is a first for me and would really like some input. I keep hearing reports of black panthers all around this Olean New York area. One problem, according to educational channels on tv and any research on the net they do not exist in United States period. Two peope I know really well seen them. Whats up mass histeria ?

They don't exist in the US UNLESS someone owned one as a pet and released it when it got too large. Kinda doubtful but not impossible.

Most all sightings are really just black house cats closer to them than folks realize tho some might be mountain lions seen in shadows which folks mistake as black rather than their actual brown coat. The rest are just hoaxes.

Seems like years ago they were suppose to have been seen around Shinglehouse too. Maybe they have moved to Olean. I would check it out if i had any family left around there.

I haven't heard the rumor about a black panther but I have heard of a mountain lion rumor...No definitive evidence has ever been produced to prove the rumor, either way.  I would err on the side of hoax for those rumors...

I found some "very large" cat prints in the mud around my place near Little Valley.  I do know there was talk about someone opening a rehab facility for large cats near East Otto, but I don't know if it ever got off the ground.

I have heard this rumor for quite a few years. But,without evidence it's still just a rumor. With all the Camtracker  cameras out in the field you would expect to see one on film. I have trapped all over Western New York as have many other trappers and you would think that one of us would have caught one , seen one or have a pic of one. All I can say is show me one. I'm not saying there isn't one out there ,but I would like to see it.

That area is fairly close to Ohio, a state where you can buy almost any animal you want. When they become big they are released/ let go so they do not eat the owner. Check with the DEC biologist in the area- I'll bet he can tell you stories of confiscating bears, lions, all kinds of things from homes in Buffalo and WNY.

I also live in that area (Portville), and on three occassions have seen what appeared to be large cat tracks in the snow.  Two were off the Windfall Road and one in the Lillibridge Road area.  Never have seen a cougar in the wild but have observed many bears and find them quite interesting.  Now, one of the most prevalent predators in the area are coyotes.  Seen several but never have had a shot at one.  I would shoot any that I could as they have a substantial effect on the deer population.
