That WAS good. But I wish O'Keefe would lose the electric guitar music and add fiddle and banjo instead ...

Good video.
They said an original Ordnance rifle at full elevation would shoot 7 or 8 miles.  I'm not sure about that.  I thought 3 miles was more likely.
Anyone have any thoughts on that?
Also, I was surprised they were using linstocks instead of friction primers.  I wonder why.

Cheaper and less likely of altering point of aim?

Zulu

The longest range given in a table that I have for an Ordnance Rifle is 4180 yards (2.375 miles) at 16 degrees.  Time of flight is 17 sec.

For a Parrott it shows 6200 yards (3.52 miles) at 35 degrees, and time of flight 31.3 sec.  At 15 degrees the range is 4200 yards and time of flight 16 sec.

I am assuming that this would be first strike point and there may be additional distance on the ricochet.  From a practical standpoint, if you can't see it you don't have much chance in hitting it.  In fact the effective range was considered to be about 2000 yards.

Considering the numbers of folks just behind the piece, I would guess it's a rule to prevent small pieces of brass or copper from hitting the folks observing the shoot.

I don't recall linstocks being used by anyone the time I went to Fort Shenadoah.

In competative shooting linstock is used because of risk of pulling gun off target . Most friction primers require 15 plus lbs. pull and these gun have there wheels and trails worked in to very  smooth and leveled dirt and some are even set in steel channel iron .To give the gun consistant rollback and in battery setting as there is also a time limit on most events .

When I competed there I used friction primers, and won several times.   The friction primer tube goes into the air at a slight angle without being any problem when it comes down.  The spectators are maybe 70 or so feet behind the guns. When we compete at Grayling steel ramps or platforms are not allowed.

Does anyone know what Kevin Oyarzo's Hardaway Battery 3in Ordnance Rifle is shooting shown at 7:33 in video . They are shooting very good for a smooth bore at 200 yards, looks like he is trying to keep his projectile secret? Thanks

if i remember correctly he shoots a turned peice of aluminum round stock. as do alot of the better smooth bore teams do.  that is why i say round balls are not always best.   he better hope he never looses his inspection because he is granfathered in  he can win because of the bore diameter to length of tube.  its simple math.
but he is very good none the less.

RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

I would not have guessed you could fire a slug from a smooth bore cannon with anything like the accuracy they are getting . Fine shooting indeed. Thanks for the information , it will be fun to try it out .
