Hobbies?
« on: April 06, 2011, 11:25:46 AM »
Was wondering what, if any, hobbies you might have. One of mine is making flint knives. I made a post showing a few in the forum for knives. Check them out and let me know what you think. Hey, it keeps me out of trouble. lol

Visiting people that need help and attention. It's not really a hobby in the sense that I don't really enjoy it, but I do it because they are people in need and we need to help people if we can. It makes their day, and it's a good feeling to know I can do that.

Besides hunting and fishing.  I build a cannon every now and again when time permits. Making something with my hands out of wood or steel has always been my hobby. I made a few knives. My new hobby is trying to teach the grand boys how to do these things.

Taking old run down houses that everybody thinks is ready for the bulldozer and making them something to be proud of. I'm starting on my third since I retired. The first I bought for $8,000 and sold it for $80,000. I bought the one we are living in now for $20, 000 and the county tax  assessor says it's worth $120,000. Now I am working on a place in the country that will probably take the rest of my years it was so bad, but it is really a dream place for me.

Well for me it's mostly shooting, reloading, and casting.
Other than that I carve Prayer pipes for my tribal members and some pleasure rock carving.

Hunting, Fishing, Swimming, shooting (rifle, pistol, and sporting clays), collecting butterflies and insects, reloading, college football (War Eagle), spending some time with grandkids, camping, hiking, traveling, gardening.  I will be glad when I can retire, I don't have much time to do them all.

Keeping this old decrepid wornout body going.  I feel like a seventeen year old stuck in a 62 year old beat-up and worn out body.

Keeping Michelle happy.  She is my best hunting partner, don't want to stop her from hunting with me.

I'm supposed to be retired, but I am so busy I had more free time when I worked.

Shooting, Hunting, Shooting, Riding Snow Machines, Shooting, Riding 4-Wheelers, Shooting, Reloading, Shooting, Reading, Shooting, Serving on the Game Board Advisory Commitee, And did I mention Shooting.  I shoot three to four days a week at either the range in Fairbanks, or out on the trails.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I think of my wood working as a hobby, but the two things that I spend most of my time at these days is bike riding and kayaking.  A number of years ago, sailing was my passion.  Just before retiring we sold the boat, because we thought that moving to the desert was our goal.

I started paddling in a canoe that my wife bought for me for fifty bucks.  That evolved into sea kayaking and that is where I'm at now.  Here's a word of warning: If you have any important things you need, or want to do with your life, don't take up sea kayaking.  It will consume you.  I'll be out on the water today in one of my beauties.

Was a white water kayaker for many years. I've been considering ocean kayaking a lot recently. Thanks for the warning. I'd like to do overnights in the Chesapeake bay and surf at Ocean City.

Warning if you do attempt to buy a "still" online expect a call from the BATFE inquiring as to why you want a still and a rather long sermon about the process and miriade of permits you will need in order to operate said devise.  don't ask me how I know  ::)  However you can make as much beer and wine as you want!!! ;D

If you do that, be careful and read about the hazards. Distilling is a dangerous process, and that's one the reasons you can make beer or wine, but distilled alcohol may be illegal to make. Any normally handy person can do it, just be careful. There have been some nasty fires, including the occasional fatality.

I used to live in a part of Tennessee where moonshine is still commonly made. If you do distill and decide to make a particular beverage, try moonshine. It has a very distinctive umm, not flavor, but sensation in your mouth unlike other liquors. It'll peel the paint off the hair on your chest. It is also something with a rich history and a distinctively American style.

I made a lot of wine once upon a time, back before it was legal to brew beer.  I'm going to try beer, I've had all the equipment for some time, but as much as I'd like some good "corn likker" I don't want a visit by them "Revenuers"  (pronounced Rev-noors).  It's still (no pun intended) illegal as far as I know...  :-\

That said, I once had a distant family member, long dead, who gave me a gallon jug of some unlabeled beverage every Christmas.  Best sippin likker you ever wrapped your gums around!   ;D  Of course I'm sure it was just some repackaged store bought stuff...  ::)

Nope, I'll stay with my current hobbies: building a boat, knives, leather work, woodworking, stockmaking, BP rifle building, shooting, motorcycles, such stuff as that.  But that's this week.  who knows about next week?   :-\  I'm a serial hobbyist...  ;D

I was trying to quote an earlier post but screwed it up.  Some of the online "Still" sites are fakes run by BATFE, I guess to "educate" the public as to the legalities involved in distilling spirits.  ???  However the same equipment is used for distilling water for purification purposes and disaster preparedness and is an acceptable reason to want a "still".  No permit is required for water distillation. ::) Makin likker is illegal  :D

Was wondering what, if any, hobbies you might have.

Land Management for wildlife.  I am grateful to practice recreationally what our Nation's farmer's do every day.  I am grateful that equipment for farming is not considered (like the automobile) as consumable or made to be replaced every 2 to 3 years, and that a piece of basic equipment, the tractor, with proper use and maintenance, can be used for 35 years or MORE!  If I could figure out how to conveniently drive it 5-miles one-way to the office, I WOULD!

Hunting as it keeps a body healthy, motivated, and renewed in spirit.

Shooting proficiency because the game deserves it.

Reloading because to shoot this much AND pay retail would be fiscal negligence.

I decided to make simple stands from antler so the knives can be displayed. Pics are a little dark but I don't think they turned out too bad since it's been about 12 years since I made one. I'm really having fun making them and do my best to keep old traditions alive. Not sure if I'll sell them. It agravates my weife but I usualy give the things I make to someone that falls in love with an item and shows they apreciate the effort I put into making it. Guess it's a Cherokee thing but a person's genuine apreciation means more to me than money.
