M&P 38 spcl
« on: April 06, 2011, 01:40:32 PM »
Well I am the proud owner of a m&p 38 spcl. I need to know the best place to buy a barrel and what needs to be done to change one out. The barrel is pitted some on the inside and outside. I suppose as long as this one is it could be cut but I would rather just install a 4 or 6" barrel and be done. Thanks in advance.

I would shoot what you have first and see if the pitting makes a diff.
ugly , yep but it still could be a practical shooter.
and any parts you get may still have some rust, may not be the right barrel (pinned and recessed) bull barrel, pencil.
I would go to a gun smith and see what they would charge to change it out and what options you have.

Another option for a barrel is to check on the S&W forum.  Lots of fellows there are very knowledgeable and will give decent advice.

If it were mine, I shoot it a bit first and see how it does.  Sometimes the pits really don't matter.

I am not sure but I believe the S&W M&P model did not have a large variety of barrel styles, just a variety of lengths.  I have seen them in 2" 4" 5" 6" and 6 1/2" but all had the skinny barrel.  The Model 10 had bull and skinny barrels.  None of the 38 Specails were recessed.  That was a feature save for the rimfires and the Magnums.

Another cost to installing a "new" barrel would be refinishing.  You would possibly need to do the whole revolver.  Good luck!

Thanks numrich has some as well as a few on gun broker. I will just shoot but the pits really bother me. It will be getting a new barrel. I am thinking a 4 or 5" will be just the ticket. Thanks

If you can get a 5" that would be nice. They are getting harder to find. You may want to make sure the front sight config is time appropriate. If its a pre 10 it should be a half moon sight. A serrated escalating sight may shoot different with the tight rear notch of a pre 10.  Mechanically it would fit, though.
