Question for 32 Magnum on HANDI GUN 20 ga. barrel
« on: April 08, 2011, 07:08:47 AM »
Hey everyone, I just bought a used 20 ga barrel that is a great little 22 inch modified that is stamped Handygun on the top. No issues with it at all, I am just wondering how old it may be. It shoots great and is a great combo barrel for my 44 mag SB1 frame. Anybody have one on an original frame that we can look up the serial no.? Just wondering.  Thanks thejanitor
Edit- It is stamped Handi gun - sorry for the confusion

Thanks for moving the topic in the right direction, but the barrel has no number or prefix. Thats why I asked about someone having one on the original frame. Sorry for the confusion.  thejanitor

I suggested the janitor post it here in the H&R Misc forum so 32 Magnum can tell us when they were made.  ;)

I think they were after the 148 Toppers and maybe after the 158's if I were guessing I'd say after 1965 and before 1970. Kurt

Here is what I got back from the previous owner today,
It came to me with a NEF NC prefix SB2 .30-30.  I thought it might have been a combo  - no s/n on the lug though. Also, isn't the top of the barrel marked SB2? Thought shotguns were usually marked SB1.
And he is right- it says "Handygun  Handi gun model SB2" stamped on the top of the chamber area. A NC ser number would indicate 1988 IF that was the combo it was factory fitted to. Thats only a couple years newer than my 58 topper 30-30. But when did they start the term SB1 or SB2? Because my topper is a case hardened reciever.
Wow talk about back to history 101,.
Thanks every one for the input and anyone who actually has one can pipe up and let us know more. Gendoc does have a couple stamped "HandygunII" not just Handygun.
Thanks  thejanitor

The Handygun II model 258 was made by H&R Inc, if the barrel is marked SB1 as well as Handygun, then it was made by H&R 1871, H&R Inc didn't make any SB1s or SB2s that I know of, those frame designations came later than 1986 after H&R Inc went out of business.

"Because my topper is a case hardened reciever."

One thing you got to remember is the differance between case hardened and case color hardened.  The colored ones on H&R's is not really Hardened at all like say revolvers are. The older frames are cast iron with the faux color. The SB1's with the color are maybe a little harder and the SB2's with the color are investment cast. I guess what I am trying to say if that does not make sense is . On the toppers the colored ones are no differant than the plain blued are. The only reason they have some that have centerfire bbl's on them is because those calibers are low pressure.
Can you take a picture of the stamping . It sounds to me like it is marked maybe for someones personal use. Or just a guess being a 1988 model it could of been NEF was new and still trying to figure out how they wanted to mark the guns and were still using parts and such that were there with the new purchace of the company. We also know they continued to mark bbl's with the SB2 even though it really has no bearing as to what frame it may go on. While I am rambling here ...I do have a theory as to why they did the SB2 stamping though. Maybe because they are all 4140 steel and every thing else is 11?? whatever.??? Kurt

My close detail pictures usually are blurry, I am sure there is a setting somewhere in the camera to make it better, but? ... But I will try later today. All I know is this barrel is SO COOL. After I find another one I think everyone should have one...  ;D  thejanitor

Ok remember how I used the " " marks because this is exactly what it said... Well the picture says it all. it isn't handY it says HANDI and MODEL SB2  It does say MOD but down below. Sorry for the mix up, but it still is different than any I have seen here yet.

FROM MY EXPERIENCE Anything marked SB2 will have been made during the MARLIN years - after 2000.  I have purchased 4 barrels for a Marlin made frame and the only ones that fit properly were marked SB1.  Usually the SB2 designation indicates a shotgun barrel fitted to a rifle frame.  I don't have any pics and the firearm, along with a lot of others, is stored in a secure storage area - so I can't go take a look right now.  MOD, obviously indicates modified choke.  I don't know if that barrel with those markings will fit on a standard shotgun frame - but would really like to know for future reference.

I just have it on an SB1 rifle frame now, I don't know if I ever will have a shotgun frame. Sorry, if I do get one and remember this thread I will try to update it then. But with all the handi barrels out there I didn't think it was that different. But like you said maybe if it was fitted with a rifle combo they marked it as such. ?  Either way it's fun. Thanks for all the feedback gang.  thejanitor
