30-30 topper about done
« on: April 08, 2011, 06:35:47 PM »
Well its been quite awhile since Ive posted. due to work etc. Here is my question for you all. I am thinking about sending my 30-30 topper barrel to wayne york it has pitting showing. What caliber would you convert to? I have a intrest in a .348 win.
What did you do today...for Freedom?
Today, at the front, he died...Today, what did you do? Next time you see a list of dead and wounded, ask yourself: "What have I done for freedom? What can I do tomorrow that will save the lives of men like this and help them win the war?"
Taken from WWII poster, still applies today.

As far as I know, all H&R Inc 30-30 Topper barrels have soldered undelugs, so you need to keep pressure low, 30-40 Krag would be a good one if the bore can be salvaged, the 348 Win wouldn't be suitable due to the large case head size even though the pressure is still near 30-30 pressure. I wouldn't spend $350 on a Topper barrel myself, if you want something unique, have a modern barrel rebored and chambered, but have Wayne turn the barrel down first, then you have a welded underlug and a modern 4140 barrel as well as the slim contour of the older barrels.  ;)

The. 30/40 was the very first thing that popped I to my mind too Tim!!

It's a good improvement over the grand old 30-30. A very handi friendly chambering.

I would clean the rust out of it and leave it as a 30-30. My Toppers show excellent accuracy with several bullets and will launch 170 grain bullets @2300 fps with the new LeverEvolution propellant. Highly accurate and one heckuva deer caliber.

.38-55?

I wouldn't be too quick to give up on the barrel.  Unless you've allready tried and it isn't good anymore.  Looks can be deceiving.

Yep, clean it up and shoot for test.
If you want to check on rebore contact 'High Plains Reboring'.
IIRC the old standard 38-55 twist was 1:18; if I got one done today I would go with 1:16 and be able to shoot some longer, heavier bullets if I wanted. Silouette and schuetzen guys have been doing it for some time.
