Barrel Refinishin
« on: April 09, 2011, 05:21:24 AM »
I picked up a Mosin Nagant a while ago that I bought with the idea that I would sporterize it.  (Please suplus fanatics don't hate me)  Before I get real far in the process I would like to strip the original finish off the barrel (which includes some minor rust blemishes).  I then want to cold blue the barrel.  I was curious what you in GBO world would recommend for stripping it down?  Thanks

Forget the refinishing. I have never found a cold blue that worked worth a crap. If you don`t want to spend the money for hot blue leave it alone.

I'd use a mild abrasive and a blast cabinet..

White distilled vinegar will strip it down to bare steel.
I use a section of pvc pipe with a cap on one end slide the stripped barreled action down in the pipe and fill with vinegar.
Let it soak for about 20 minutes remove and rinse well with cool water card it off with 0000 steel wool then rinse with very hot water.

For an excellent cold blue, do a search on Belgian Blue, and watch the videos on Rust Blue Process, Brownells and Midway sell it, Mark Lee's blue may be a less expensive alternative, I made my hot water tank out of a section of galvanized gutter with end caps soldered on, heat it on my BBQ.
