1911 conversions
« on: December 26, 2003, 11:59:28 AM »
I am wanting to convert 4 1911 handguns currently used as self defense to a decent back-up for a bear hunt.  I have read bits and pieces about 45 super, 45 win mag, and 460 rowland.  The only one that I have read anything directly pertaining to my situation is with the 460.  Something about it's ballistics being very similar to the 44 mag.  Any ideas on what these cartridges are capable of or posible other conversion calibers?

For the .460 Rowland check with Clark Custom at this link http://www.clarkcustomguns.com/rowland.htm#research

For the Super the most knowledgeable people are the ones who were in on the development ACE Custom .45s  http://www.acecustom45.com/

I hope this helps. Sean

338 R&C:  go back up to either the Handgun Hunting or General Handgun forum - there were some recent posts on the two heavy conversions you mentioned for your 1911, for just the reason you mentioned and some disagreement was clearly evident.  I would disagree as well, especially if you are going for larger bear.  I would save the 1911's and for what it would cost you to convert, etc., purchase a used heavy caliber revolver.  HTH.  Mikey.
