Arsenal Exercise
« on: April 10, 2011, 12:08:11 AM »
With an expanding gun safe and some rereading of my reloading journal, I worked up how often I go to the range and how much recreational ammo I shoot.  My "habit" is about once every three weeks, two to four hours there, three to five guns, and average 150 to 200 rounds per trip (3,000 to 4,500 rounds annually).  This is, by comparison to competitive shooters, not a lot; but it is sufficient to be sure.  Coupled with these trips are fuel, replenishment of consumables, and hours of reloading.  Just doing my part to keep the economy going... ;)

These numbers are supported by my journal and are on the increase now that I am "feeding" four .223's including two "take-me-with-you-'cause-I-am-a-half-hour-of-fun-to-shoot" AR-15's, twin .45's, twin .380 Auto's, twin .357's and two teenage boys.  The range is 1/2 hour and 35 one-miles away.  Trips there and back are more and more frequent in Year 20.  The shotguns are probably the least exercised, but well used in duck season...provided the ducks participate.

L O,

Common problem.  I average 1 trip a week during the winter and 2+ trips a week during the warmer months.   At my current rate, just with my 45 cal rifles, I am going to leave well over a 100 pounds of lead/copper in the backstop this year.  BTW, this is not recreational shooting, this is therapy. 8)

Holidays usually mean a trip to the flood diversion lake east of town with the boys (six of 'em), the girls who wish to (up to four, depending on how many tiny Walton's are dependent on them), and as many of the 26 grandkids we can stuff into trucks, suburbans, and jeeps to make the trip.  Of course, none of 'em bring their own ammunition.....
Last trip out nearly wore out my Garand, and put some severe wear on two of the more popular AR's.  It is not unusual to go through four cases of clay birds and at least a couple of shells for each bird.  The boys have figured out that it's easier, and faster to just hand throw birds rather than setting up the trap and loading it.  My old Model 12, the 1300, my 870's and 1100's get a severe workout!  At first, the daughters and DIL's preferred the 20 ga. guns, but as they improved, they've moved to the 12 ga, the boys, who want more of a challenge have gone to the 20 ga, 28, and 410.....
It all nearly came to a screaching halt several years back when one son pulled out my pet K-38 S&W, a gorgeous mid-50's production revolver, had a squib load that left a bullet just under the front sight, and then fired again, not knowing what had happened.  Just got the barrel replaced a year ago, which turned it into a faux Model 15, just like I packed in my early AF active duty days.
It don't matter much what cost, they get trigger time they wouldn't normally get, they all show improvement each time out, and for us, it's real quality time!  Much better than sitting around watching whatever is the latest release from Hollyweird.  Just wish that they'd get better jobs so they can start treating me with 'free' ammo and guns!!!
I told my pap and mam I was going to be a mountain man; acted like they was gut-shot. "Make your life go here, son. Here's where the people is. Them mountains is for Indians and wild men." "Mother Gue", I says "the Rocky Mountains is the marrow of the world," and by God, I was right. Keep your nose in the wind and your eye along the skyline

Sounds like Grandpa needs to start leaving better hints to the DIL's and grandkids just prior to his birthday and Christmas...MidwayUSA and Sportsmen's Guide catalogs with the page corner folded over and copious indelible marker circles sure leaves an impression.  You just can't buy that kind of quality family time any other way.  Very nice.
