Don't do it.  The ATF would come after you!  You're describing making a "sawed off" pistol shotgun.  Very illegal.

12 ga loads are measured as 28 inches
subtract 5 FPS per inch to 20 inches and then 10 FPS for every inche under 20 inches
Also add 5 FPs to 36".
So.
a 1200 FPS load is going to come out of a 18.5" barrel at 1145 FPS. (8X5)+(10 X1.5) = 55 Fps.
Not significant enough to change a load from killing to bouncing off.

i was shooting  my  9 inch  o/u
a  deputy cam over and said  ''you make sure you don't get caught with that''

it has a tighter pattern  now than  when it was  18 inch  cylender.....with  buck shot.

we assume the loss in velocity  reduces the air dispersing the pellets  ...[.wild  guess]

I think you could do it legally with no hoops to jump through if you used a rifled (slug) shotgun barrel. You'd still want to verify with the ATF.............
Just another worthless opinion!!

Depending on the state you may beable to do it.
As a pistol/ handgun very illegal as you are not allowed to have a handgun over .5 caliber.
the 50 S&W and other .50s that are being $50 tax stamp my be required.  When I was in College the 14" entry guns were the rage and in VA it was possible to own them with the tax stamp, in other states where class 3 is not allowed you can not do it.
Then there is the whole legal thing about you registering it as a long gun and you will not beable to turn that frame into anything other than a long gun.  You are legally allowed to make a long gun out of a pistol but not allowed to make a pistol out of a long gun.

$200  to cut a long gun  or to  TRANSFER ownership

$5 to transfer ''any other weapon''........example shotgun  pistol..
.WITH NO STOCK AND NEVER HAS.....originally manufactured as such

ANY RIFLED BARREL  over 50 caliber.....exceptions  for slug guns, 577tyronasous  etc
is considered a destructive device

this is all federal  laws

don't know of anything  that a $50 applies too....unless that is  YOUR state law

i have been considering registering a handi reciever....then tinker with  things
but  my  16 inch  45-70  is already  reak ''handi''  without all the paper work
plus  you have to report any time and  why you  want to cross statelines....[HASSLE]

As I said when I was in college in VA it was the rage to get the 14" barrels on an 870 as an entry gun and while I did not get one I thought I was told it was a $50 stamp for the short barrel.
