This Old Remington 700
« on: April 10, 2011, 07:23:48 AM »
I bought this on Friday and I was very pleased to aquire it.  It's a 1965 700 ADL in .30-06 with a like new Weaver K4 on it.  I believe the scope and mounts are original to the rifle.  All the metal is 99% and the wood is maybe 85%.  I hate to change the scope, so I'm going to try to use it.  Eye relief and position seem much more critical than with a modern scope and the crosshairs are harder to see.  I'm considering a Leupold Gloss finish 2-7X33.

Nice gun, good caliber, scrap the scope if you intend to hunt with it. It was a fine scope in it's day but.... I have several 2x7 Leupolds and love them. I like the  lower power for the woods area I hunt and don't miss 9x out to 300 yards. My Rem 700 is chambered in 280 Rem and wears a 4x12 Leupold for distance work.

Great rifle from the peak remington quality years.. The old weaver may be just fine. If the rifle groups well I'd just hunt the heck outa it...

;) Nice old Remington....My favorite Rem. was made just a few years later...they are great old rifles and that one looks to bein excellent condition...In my part of the country, clean used rifles are very difficult to come by..when I travel, I always like to check out the local gunshops...some parts of the country are full of fine older weapons at reasonable prices...looks like your area is a dandy...congradjulations.....

I know you know this but, adjust that scope to YOU. I didn't, I got bit, IT HURT, nuff said!  Those older scopes, without that rubber Oring on the back, will get your attention and some kinda QUICK.

I moved it forward about as far as it would go yesterday.  I then adjusted the focus to my eyes.  It's much better now.

That's another dandy to add to the collection Swampy. You got a knack for finding the good ones. ;)
I like them old Weavers but I think the crosshairs are too fine.
