Sit in or sit on kayak
« on: April 10, 2011, 02:38:47 PM »
I've just started looking at kayaks and have little experience with them.  What are the pros and cons of sit in verses sit on type kayaks?

Any particular type or shape that will be most stable?

I mostly want this for fishing on ponds and streams.  Any input for a newbe is much apreciated.

We(wife and I) bought sit-in-kayaks(SIKs) a few years ago, really like them, great for touring, track well, I bought the fishing version thinking it would do double duty, but after a lot more research on fishing yaks, a sit-on-top(SOT) is a better fishing platform.

If your fishing SOT's are the way to go unless you live up north and its cold a lot of the time your out yaking.  If your recreational yaking either will do.  Getting in an out of a SIK can get old fast though...

i fished for years on a SOT kayak in the Pacific off San Diego coastline. I'd get off work, launch my yak in the surf, and fish the local kelp beds. For fishing you definately want the sit on top, self bailing type. If you get hit with a boat wake or in my case a wave the yak fills with water. A couple strokes forward with yer paddle and the water flows out the holes in the bottom of the yak as the yak floats to surface again. Great fun....Mike
