A single shot in 7.62 Russian?
« on: April 11, 2011, 06:26:24 AM »

Dear Guys,

Sorry to ask such an elementary question, but does anybody make a single shot in 7.62 x 39mm?   I know that Ruger made a limited run of No. 1s in this caliber many years ago, but they only made 200, and they made them in stainless (yuch).

If nobody makes one, would it be possible to use a .308 Winchester rifle, with a chamber insert?   I know the barrel would be .308 instead of .311, but maybe American made 7.62 Russian would work ok in it?

  Thanks for all info.

Regards, Mannyrock

Oops, somebody just sent me an e-mail, telling me that Rossi makes a single shot in 7.62 Russian.

The Rossi's have been out for a while.  What's the verdict on them?  Are the barrels .308 or .311?

Any other factory single shots in Russian?

Thanks, mannyrock

H&R made a Handi Rifle in 7.62x39. It is discontinued but they turn up from time to time.
Rossi currently makes one. I have one and it's a good shooter. It has a .311 barrel.
Remington was importing them for a while and calling them Spartans. You don't hear too much about them though so I don't know about the quality or how they shoot.
If you wanted a bolt action CZ makes a very nice rifle in 7.62x39. It might be worth your while to check it out.

If you're looking for one to shoot milsurp ammo you would probably have the best luck with the Rossi. The main reason H&R discontinued them was fail to fire problems when using milsurp ammo. The Rossi's don't seem to be troubled with ftf's like the H&R. My Rossi will shoot milsurp all day long without a hiccup. Again, I don't know about the Remington offering. I've never heard of ftf's with the CZ bolt gun.

Spanky,

Thanks for the great info.   I am a little confused though.  Several posters on the Rossi board say that they have slugged their barrels and that they have the .308 bore.      Has Rossi been changing its barrels?  Any idea what their brand new rifles have?

   Thanks for any info.

I think that EAA is importing the Baikal line of shotguns and some rifles again.  Included may be that little break-open single shot that they used to bring in, chambered in 7.62 by 39.  I read this someplace but can't recall where.

You can also get an Encore barrel in the 7.62x39 from some custom barrel houses.

+1 on the Encore barrel. Mine is a standard T/C barrel and slugs .308. I
pull the .311 steel slugs and load Remington .308 125gr SPs. It will shoot
very well, moves the gong pretty good.

I'm not sure what the brand new barrels are slugging at. Mine is 6 years old and it slugs at .311. I've shot .308 and .311 through it and it shoots equally well. I haven't reloading for it yet but if I do it will be with gas checked cast bullets sized to .312.

I was lucky to find a new Handi 7.62x39 through a GBO member here about a year ago.  It has the nicest Handi Pallet Wood stock I have ever seen.  It is among the most accurate rifles I own, and after several hundred steel cased Russian rounds through it, have never had a fail to fire.

That's the older Russian round, approx. equivalent to a .30-06. The 7.62x39 came along in the '40s, and is close to a .30-30 ballistically...

In the 7.62x54R designation, the R is for rimmed, not Russian.
