looking for a gunsmith

I'm looking for a gunsmith that will work on a Valmet 412. The only one I have found is on the west cost but I live in Va. Anyone know of somebody?

try Griffin and Howe in NJ. They have a great gunsmith department (work on shotguns almost exclusively) and you can send them it UPS. I found them somewhat pricey ($125 per hour) but they'll do a great job.

Are you looking at custom from scratch or changing the bore of an existing barrel set?

I have been doing alot of resarch for my next round and I think I want a 280 or 280 AI. I think I want a custom bbl set 12/280

  I think you are looking at balistics tables, and thinking like a bolt gun user, even asking advice from bolt action users here on GB.  This will get you into trouble, as they (bolt action users) don't have to pay near as much attention to the pressures they load to.

  You just can't treat a break open action firearm, not even a Valmet 412, like a bolt action firearm, and there lies your problem.  I suspect you are headed for "action" problems.

  Here is the BEST Valmet 412 advice you will ever get!  Buy the 30-06 and use it!

Hey ATM

DM has extensive experience with the Valmet's and break open rifles.  If you research rimmed vs non rimmed versions ( e.g. 7x57R vs the 7x57 Mauser) you will find DM's point is validated. 

Have you looked into the 7x65r cartridge?  One of my Drillings is 16x16/7x65R and I am thinking about getting a 12/7x65r for my Valmet's.  The 7x65R might be the most versatile round for game in NA.  You should look at the ballistics for the .280 and 7x65R. 


If your interested in the 12/7x65r barrel set please let me know I might have a source, which is not me....
