My Custom .357 Max. (as received)
« on: April 13, 2011, 06:58:17 AM »
I have been trying to resolve this with the seller but he does not answer my messages, even though he did come on line right after both were sent. The barrel arrived very well packed so no damage was in transit.
The barrel was sold as a custom 16.5" .357 Max. barrel. It had started life as a H+R barrel and he had ground all the writing off it then never sanded or polished the area just added some cold bluing. The  barrel was cut to 16.5" using a pipe cutter which mushroomed the end of the barrel about 3/16 of and inch larger than the dia. should be. The barrel had also been put in a pipe vice with no padding thus leaving marks on the barrel. It also had been clamped in a steel (serrated) jawed vice with no padding which left marks on the square hinge and also some  marks on the barrel. There are also several grinder marks on the hinge and around the scope mount and many other very deep gouges on the barrel. The crown was cut crocked and the filed or ground, it is still crocked and have deep groves across it. The ejector was broken or altered and welded on and ground the left  rough. This was sold by "Diedeye" I just want to warn every one so they don't get shafted as I did. Lucky for me I have a lathe, mill and welder so all can be fixed. These problems should have been pointed out by the seller, if they had I would have only been willing to pay about 1/5 the price.  Here are some pictures:

I think the guy should take it back, refund your money, and pay the return postage  He should be banned from this website.

WOW!!

That's a pipe cut barrel if I have seen one!

You have a good attitude and from the pics you are correct looks like everything can bs fixed. BUT absolutely should have been disclosed so YOU could make the decision if you wanted to do it!!

Have you shot it?

Whether Tom decides to keep the barrel and clean it up or not....there is no excuse for such blatant mis-representation.  I second Petemi's motion!!  Who needs to be worrying about that kind of junk being sold here!!

This is an example of just what I was saying in that thread of Spanky's about inflated prices in the classifieds.  This seller apparently joined to get rid of this barrel.  He registered March 2 @ 11:06 then posted wanting to trade the barrel @ 11:21.  He hasn't posted outside the classified areas as far as I can tell.

His original post, "WTS/WTT 357max barrel," gave absolutely NO information about the barrels condition. He introduced terms or statements no one seemed familiar with: "a profino barrel" and "marrynred made the barrel," was slow to or never responded to questions asked, and seemed to have minimal communication skills.

But all this was overlooked, not to mention the price he was asking, because of the fear of losing out on something to someone posting a faster "I'll Take It!"  As a matter of fact, one member even said that "Buy first, ask questions later" is the "main rule on highly desired items."

I'm sorry you got took Tom, but full disclosure is not a requirement in the classifieds that I know of.  (I'm going back and read the rules again to make sure I haven't misspoke!  ;) )  As far as I can tell you got exactly what he advertised.  A 16.5 inch 357 Max barrel and he even told you it wasn't a factory barrel.  As far as anything else goes, you didn't ask and he didn't tell!

Personally I agree with Pete.  And since legal principles don't apply here, most of what I said also doesn't matter.  It's GB's house, we live by his rules.  I'm just disappointed (a) the classifieds have become such an "I'll take it" race that the first person to post to an add can't get a few pertinent questions answered and (b) that members will jump in with an "I'LL TAKE IT!" rather then an "I'll take it if 'X' doesn't want it."

Now, they have every right to do that if they want.  The rules allow it.  I just don't think it is the courteous or gentlemanly thing to do.  But what do I know... And who cares what I think!?  And what an I doing giving my opinion without getting paid for it!?  It's been a long week... I need a drink....

Tom I hope this does not leave a sour taste for you about this sight as most  of us here are honest. If you havent done it yet PLEASE leave feedback for this person.Hopefully he'll make good on it, dont know what you gave for it, but it aint worth it.

I still think the 'ill take it' system works well. its kinda like the old system of  'Sold' .     Other alternatives like 'hey Id like to pay less for that '
or 'What do you think if I pay less for that' or 'wait while I think it over, wont you?'  or 'maybe if you lowered your price someone would take it'     just dont have the nice ring of "ill take it'.  And the finality of it keeps arguements from happening.

I like the "I'll take it system" and I like even better the one strike and your out policy on the GBO classifieds.  On the auction sites sellers get away with this type of stuff repeatedly without any real penality.

One thought would be to put a trade ban on new members until they have been active on GBO for a minimum amount of time.  Of course this would be more work for GB and Matt and they are busy enough.

Tom, sorry you have to put a lot of your effort into that barrel but I am looking forward to the "after" pics.

I have cleaned it up and am getting ready to blue it. You would think it was a SS barrel at this time. I got to say I was suprised you could cut a barrel with a pipe cutter.  I will post pic's when it is done.

Wow, this one really bites Tom. Not what I'm used to seeing with my dealings with past classified's here on GBO.
Good for you on keeping a positive approach to this unfortunate experience. It just may end up being a real gem instead of sour grapes.
Keep us posted on the restoration.

That's a kick in the a** for sure. There's no excuse for that... it's low life dealing at it's worst.
It's good that you have the skills and tooling to fix it but that don't make it OK by a long shot.
I hope you can find some way to get your money back but sadly I wouldn't count on it. :-\

Tom,
I'm sorry you go snuckered.  How quick did he post in the classifieds?  Do we still have a rule of so many regular posts before you can post in the classified ads, or am I thinking of another site?

Man, that "profino" barrel was obviously worked on by an idiot.

I hope you get it fixed up, at least you have about a half inch to work with if you have to take a little off the crown.

Kudos to Tim for banning this guy.

Again, I too am sorry for the situation and want to commend Tim for taking the high road in dealing with it! It certainly is a bowl of lemons and he chose to make lemonade, Kudos MAN! Our other Tim is "quick" into action too, as usual!!  Thanks Man!! ;D

I see a negative attitude forming and just want to remind those folks that overall we have a HI-CLASS group of guys and gals here. Just reading this post will prove allot if you read between the lines. Just like a number of guys here, I have had many dealings thru GBO and NEVER had a major problem. The single minor problem I did have, was quickly resolved with out problems or bad feelings and good feed back was left by both parties.
I have shipped items BEFORE PAYMENT received. MANY times I have had the same. I have gotten Pm's with offers of help FREE OF CHARGE and I KNOW many of you have too!!
Please, don't let the actions of one or two individuals ruin many others hard work. Just watch the "history" like approval ratings thread count and length of membership. Remember ultimately, YOU are responsible for what you buy.
We all know Bill runs a tight ship and the way it is here baer's this out in spades. It's a safe, clean and harmonious platforum for a exchange, of like minded people. I visit daily, I check it first and multiple times a day. Even tho I haven't met very many people here at all, I consider many of you my friends.

There certainly is no excuse for such deceptive dealing !  I have dealt with several people here and have been pleased each time except one.  That one was a .308 barrel I traded for, which when I fitted it to my action had a small gap on one side of the breech. It looked like the previous owner filed the breech a bit, but didn't hold the file completely square..tipping down as he went off the far side..
It did work, so I didn't make a formal protest, but I didn't add a kudo to the seller's trade list in his profile either.  I eventually gave the barrel to my Marine Grandson, explaining the situation and telling him that if he went on to trade it, to be sure to inform any rercipient of the situation before making any deal.
If you don't want the truth, don't ask me.  If you want something sugar coated...go eat a donut !  (anon)
