sharp, pointy things... CUT!

I'm having a good time putting together my second knife.  This one is a Green River blade that I've fitted bone scales to.  Right now I'm doing the final hand polishing of the blade and handle before I start on the sheath and gift box.

While working on my first knife I just about "boned out" my thumb.   :(  Not being one to stick his hand in fire twice to make sure it was hot, I quickly fashioned a cover for the blade out of a piece of a cardboard box to use when I was working on it.   8)

I did the same thing for the current knife but found out the cardboard scratched my blade!  So I stopped using it and promptly sliced the heel of my hand...   ::)

What do y'all use to cover the blades of your knives while working on them?  Besides extream care that is!   ;D

Duct tape, then mineral spirits to get the sticky stuff off.

Never tried it, but I bet a pair of cut resistant (police) type gloves would work well for that purpose.

Multiple layers of the blue painters tape.  Easy to remove and leaves little to no residue behind.

How about an old sheath? I always in up with one somehow. You do leatherwork, next time make the sheath before you do the handle work. ;D

Poster board works well. It's smooth and tough. I just fold a piece over the blade and then use regular masking tape wrapped over everything. I don't do my final sharpening until the knife is finished.

Some interesting thoughts there guys!

I'm a regular user of duct tape but I just can't see putting some on one of my blades... It's probably an image thing...  :-\  Blue painter's tape is a thought, but when polishing I work on both the blade and handle in the same session so at some point the tape would have to come off.   :(

Gloves are a thought, but I haven't noticed any laying around and I don't know how abrasive the knife proof ones are.  'sides I feel like I loose some control and sensitivity when I wear gloves.   :-\  Kinda like wearing a r... , uh... raincoat in the shower!  Yeah!  That's it!  A raincoat!!  ::)

An old sheath would work for some blades, but I'd probably have to have a dozen laying around to cover all size blades I may work on.

Poster board may be a good idea if it will stand up to a number of insertions and extractions and remain smooth.  Oh and BTW, I don't begin to sharpen a blade until the knife is finished!   ;D

What I did last night was to cut out a scrap of lining leather and hold the blade with it.  I think I'll glue a piece of that to an appropriately sized section of poster board, fold it over, glue it shut and cover it with duct tape and/or painters tape.   :D  or, I may just buy a glove...  :P

I fold a piece of leather and put duct tape around it then insert the blade into the leather

We get the ones at Northern Safety . We use them for sheetmetal workers . They also have sleeves and finger protection.

That's pretty funny. I didn't really read the instructions. Whacked my thumb to the bone today cutting a lawnmower belt. Makes anyone feel like an idiot when it happens. :D

The only edged one's I've worked on were a couple of Green River knifes.  I just used plain masking tape in several layers.  Then again, I didn't polish the blades and expose my fingers to the edge; I cleaned them then etched both with mustard.

I never like gloves either they let the metal slip and your hands get tired trying to grip it harder. Look at the cut resistant ones on the Northern Safety site. They have rubber on them and it really works . They still get in the way on fine work but when doing bull work or moving big peices they help .

BTW that knife has nice lines . If you need field testing sent it on , can do an extended test for years  ;D

Now that suggestion has promise!   :o  A blade grip and snack all in one!!  A little picanti next to the metal polish and I'm all set!   ;D  Shoot!  If I a fridge for beer within arm's reach of my chair, I'll never have to leave the man cave!   ;D ;D

Not those square bottom shells though...  :-\  The fit would be to sloppy....  :P

Being a bit late to this thread, I have to ask.....
Since finishing this project have you cut anything else with it?  ;)
Ive been eyeing that blade for a couple of years wondering how well it would work as an 'all rounder' with the emphasis on the cheese & sausage and veggie dicing.

Nope, haven't cut a thing with it.  But let me tell you, when I finshed the edge with my Lansky it was like a razor!   :o
 
I don't know if it will hold an edge, 'cause it's boxed up ready to send off to a friend who is a member here.  After he gets it I'll tell him to let you know how it works!   ;D
 
Unfortunately, after I packed it I realised I didn't take a pic with it and the sheath...  :(   Oh well...

Lanskys will put a wicked edge on a blade for those who are willing to spend the time, I have a bowie I sharpened to a true razors edge just for the fun of it.
