I started on a quest about 10 years ago to have barrels/guns to shoot a wide range of bullet diameters. This was one of the reasons I was drawn to the handirifles (lefty also). Along the way I kind of saturated the choices from HR and discovered the ability to do simple barrel changes on a savage bolt gun. Well, I just filled two gaps that I have been wanting to fill for a while, 338win and a 6.5x284 and I have this ery feeling of contentness. I know it wont last, but for now, I just want to do what I cant get my kids to do - enjoy what I have.

223 - 243 - 357max - 445sm - 45-90 for the handyrifle

243 - 2506 - 6.5x284 - 270wsm - 7mmRem - 3006 - 300rum - 338wm - 35wln for the bolt actions

Sure, if I had to do it over, I would have different chambering on a couple of those, but thats really just case capacity differnces in the end.

favorites are hard to call, just like which child is your favorite - they all have their moments.

However, the Win70 in 270wsm is my most accurate and favorite for long range shooting. (I have hopes the new criterion barrel 6.5x284 betters this however)

45-90 with a puff of smoke is a hoot, and I like the long barrel with peep sight too

shooting 38sp, 357mag, and 357max all at the same sitting is a treat also (I think this will be a great growing gun for my kids in a few years - easy to shoot/practice and can take a deer)

30-06 is usually my deer season barrel (truth be told, all I need)

Both the 25-06 and 35whelen are savage barrels that replaced HR barrels I sold, 243 may soon follow cause I like my 26"flutted barrel by savage more.

Re: 17cal or 204 for that matter, heck a 223 is too small for my taste

I was thinking mostly of my reloading and barrel swapping at first, and left more than a few others off the list, which I better keep incomplete for fear this may make its way to my wife somehow

but I do have the 50cal in muzzleloader.

375 seems to be missing - I dont know why I never got the itch for a 38-55 from HR, and I sure would like a 405win, but would rather it be in a 1895winchester than HR.

you would need to find the brass for the 445sm first

, oops, did I say that - sorry to those looking. Keep the faith, it will return and like all of these lower pressure straight wall cases, they last a long time once you get it.

The .445 brass has been backordered from Midway since at least last October....perhaps last Summer. It was supposed to be in Feb 7th, etc. etc. etc. Some day, I believe we'll see it......if we live long enough.

In the meanwhile, I have enough to keep me going, and I can always shoot .44s.

Well, it did not last, saw a used left handed savage with the accutrigger, I was good and left the store to think it over. Next day had to race up there hoping it was still there. Unfortunately its in 243, so now I have a 24" HR Ultra Bull barrel, 26" fluted savage, and 22" savage with iron sights - all in 243. And I am not really a 243 holic either. Now I am really tempted to sell the HR barrel, but I went thru a lot of effort to get that one.

I'm sorry, but I don't give a hoot for .243/6mm. I've had my problems with them before. My .223, 22-250, .270 and .308 does all they can do, but I still prefer my big, fat, slow pistol bullets out of my Handis. There's nothing like a 385 gr. bullet wandering out there at 2000+ fps.

and you mentioned big fat pistol rounds, I was looking over the acc list and saw they still have the 500sw - I dont have one of those, and Tim was braggin about a couple of week turn around.

But, I am still resting.

I know many have good results and I dont want to deny that, but I dont like the case stretching with the really necked down cartidges in the HR. For me, its too much more to worry about when I want to fool around with a lot of different chamberings all the time. I like science projects and experimentin, but I want to pick them and not have them be forced on me. Thats why the HR 25-06 is gone and why I duplicated the 243 in a bolt action.

On gunbroker there is a "display" cartridge for sale, it is a 17/50 BMG. I think it maybe one of Mr. Hubel's creations.

Send your .243 barrel to Wayne York. Have him rebore it to 375-08. Then you'll have a really nice .375.

well,

the shorter savage 243 has been traded for a 7-08

I bought a 220 swift barrel, swapped out stocks, replaced a trigger

in the process of selling the HR 243 barrel

Maybe I will be sending away for a 500sw soon.

That couple of days worth of rest really helped.

An old, dear friend in Great Falls, Montana took it on himself to neck 50 BMG case to hold a phonograph needle. He was working on a 30mm aircraft cannon case to hold the same "projectile", but I never heard if he got that one accomplished before he passed away......

7mm brenneke was one of the chambers I was interested in, but they dropped it before I sent for one. But, now I have 2 other 7mm options already.

On gunbroker there is a fellow who sells 17/50 display cartridges. 17 grain bullet in a 50 BMG case. I heard that the same gentleman likes to juice up 12 ga shotguns.
