Buffalo Bore Heavy .30-30 Ammo
« on: April 16, 2011, 02:14:26 PM »
I was surfing the Net this afternoon and ran across Buffalo Bore's website - they are now loading 190 grain bullets in .30-30.  Seems like they are copying the old .303 Savage recipe - it was a .30 caliber cartridge that was loaded 190 gr and considered great on bear and moose.  With the better metal technology for bullets, it might be an interesting cartridge that could up the ante for the beloved .30-30 rifle of choice.  It is fairly new so it will be interesting to hear from those who will take the risk and use on on a cooperating elk, moose, or bear.   :D

A number of years ago, may 10-15, an outdoor writer, Sam Fadala, wrote of handloading the .30-30 using pulled .303 bullets in 180 or 190 grain ( I forget which ). Glad to see Buffalo Bore making them.

That was/is a great article and those bullets make for probably the best 30-30 load for larger game like bear, elk or moose.  I picked up 150 of the 190 gr Silver tips (same bullet loaded in Winchesters .303 Savage ammo) right after reading that article at a gunshow.  I still have 100 left and save them for my 24" M94AE and big game.  Sure wish Winchester would make them again and/or load them in 30-30 ammo.

i would have to guess theres more to the bb ammo then just the heavier bullet. 3030s are notoriously downloaded from the factory and theres usualy a good 200 fps that can be added to factory ballistics safely in a modern gun.

I cast bullets for mine that actually run 180gr when cast from WW! The Lee 170gr mold!  I can run them the same speed as factory 170gr ! ;D
