would like some expert opinions on a new SB1 in 44 mag

First, love this forum and really appreciate the great info offered on Handis here. 

For his first gun, I just bought my son a "Gander Exclusive" 44 mag SB1 from Gander Mountain.  It's his 10th birthday present.  I know the SB1 is weaker and is not capable of handling higher pressure cartridges.  I am ok with that as I have no plans to add barrels.  My son likes to deer hunt with the 44 mag and I guess you can't buy a new SB2 in 44 mag. 

Now my question.  Is the SB1 in 44 mag just as good (accurate/safe/reliable/long lived/ etc.) as an SB2 with a 44 mag barrel added?  Are there any problems out there with the SB1 44 mag associated with the weaker manufacture of the SB1?  Any thoughts would be appreciated.  Thanks.

The new SB1 44mags are great shooters. Don't worry about that frame, it'll serve you well for as long as you want to shoot it. A 44mag is bad medicine for deer too. I shot a buck last year with a 240gr. soft point from my 44mag and he only made it about 20 feet before he fell on his face. :D
Make sure you get some 44special ammo too for plinking. The 44 is a fun gun. ;)

love mine!!  killed a nice buck with mine last year also.  should be a good gun for a 10 yr old.  not abusive at all.  i wouldnt worry about the frame either, just shoot it and have fun.  lots of fun for target or just plinking. mine shoots whatever you feed quite well, my handloads were more consistent tho.  have fun.

Thanks fellows.  You know the whole Handi Rifle story can get a little confusing and I just got to wondering about the sb1 vs. sb2 after my purchase. I plan to shoot the rifle soon.  I'll post a range report when finished.  Thanks again.

The only reason mine is on a SB2 frame is that we reamed it to .445 SuperMag.  Also, I keep all my centerfire rifles on SB2s.....just so that down the line nobody puts the wrong barrel on a light frame.

If I told you how accurate my 44 handi is you would call me a liar! so I wont

Seriously it is a fantastic shooter
I started with a plastic stock as from the factory now I went to a Laminated Thumhole its nice

I also started with a Sightron SI 3 to 9 by 40mm the scope is fine but not enough eye relief for that rifle so I went to Columbia (Kruger optical) 2 to 7 by 33MM its the bomb. I had one of their straight 4x on my 357 its really a great scope

On the 44 I switch stock and scope and have not shot it yet hope I didnt mess a good thing!

If any one has any interest I would post pics I kinda like these a bunch the 357 and 44

Boatboy,
Many guys have commented about the exceptional accuracy of a number of calibers. Most notably the 30-30, 357 and 45/70's. The 44 got a bad start with the oversized bores some years back. But they have had good or proper sized bores for some time now. I would not at all be surprised to begin to hear of excellent shooters.

My family has a great shooter (44 mag on a SB1) Everyone that shoots it loves it even with hog loads.... And for accuracy boatboy and I better not even try starting to one up each other  ;)
It is one of the favorites. With a youth stock set it is one of the "handi-est" for quick handling, even though it is stock - not a shorty -it feels very user friendly. You will like it very much.

I just wanted to show my favorite  (maybe) Handis I pretty much described them in a previous post but I wanted to show them
What do I like about them? fun to shoot    Cheap to shoot    something you can change up from time to time   all of the above!
We all have guns that have value 5x these but I dont think we have guns 5x more fun than these Just my opionion

The top is 357 with a straight 4X Columbia by Kruger optical (If you have not seen one they are great for an inexpensive scope)

The Middle is a 44 barrel opened up to 444 Marlin with a Sightron SII 1.5 to 6 it fits perfect in the lower

Bottom 44 Mag with a 2 to 7 Columbia (again by Kruger)

Kurt, they are very nice, but a Handi is a Handi because it is Handy.  I'm not into thumbholes, but I like the looks of them.  Mine are just plain jane shooters.  I beat the brush with them, and wouldn't want to drag a pretty stock out there and come home to refinish it.  Just lazy again.

Aw Pete I am hurt HAHA not really

I did sell the plastic stocks off those but deep down I thought I should keep one set. But in reality in the thumb I really only can hunt with a muzzle loader any way. I have not hunted with a rifle in quite a while.

So I did appreciate your offer to come up and hunt.

Dont forget Midland Gun show is coming but its not what it was but you are welcome here
