No, I'm not pitching for peta. Found it on another site and thought it would be rather informative for some but not all. But as a child, I helped my uncle out from time to time on his dairy farm, and never witnessed him proding his milk cows with a pitchfork. Sorry.... for not thinking logically.

Same here . Right now Im feeding out a couple of feeder pigs, one for my family , one to trade for some grass fed beef. Raised up a bunch of chickens, some for eggs some are in the freezer. Plus a couple deer a year. But the truth of the matter is theres a whole lotta people on this rock, & they gotta eat.

People today are so far removed from the food that finds its way to their mouth they forget something has to die to feed them. I raise my beef.

I only watced about 15 secounds of it to realize that it had no content that I wanted to watch reguardless of it's purpose. Slaughter might could be made less repulsive to watch but not necessarily less cruel to the animal nor more efficent. I just didn't see the need for the grafficness of the post if someone wern't on some crusade. ear

I don't see much need to watch this stuff.
It obviously is produced to evoke emotions.

I'm adding a graphic warning to the original post so people won't be surprised by the video.
I'm struggling with if this shouldn't be deleted.

So how would the amount of food needed each day be produced at a enomical price ? Many of the people eating these products can hardly afford them now.

If you have much in the way of a yard its actually pretty easy.  You cant be totally self suffcient but you can knock a heck of a lot out of the grocery bill, thats for sure!  And you can eat a lot better in the process as well.

I just put in a 12 x 4 foot raised bed garden using cinder bricks to form the bed.  It took 48 blocks I believe, about half of which were salvaged.  It took a yard of dirt and some compost from my rabbit cages to fill it up.  Total cost was about 200.00 fun dollars and one week end of work by me.  With 8 Heirloom Tomatoes, 18 ever bearing Strawberries, 17 Bell Peppers, 5 Jalapeno, 5 Banana Peppers, 5 Egg Plants, 17 Okra plants, 200 onion sets, recovering my investment of 200.00 fun dollars should be pretty easy.  I pretty much went with the more expensive items to purchase that can be eaten fresh in mexican or asian cusine so I could get the best bang for my buck and limited space.  When you consider that when the cooler season gets here and I can do broccoli, spinnach I should come out smelling sweet.  I also have about a half dozen dwarf or semi dwarf fruit trees in large planter pots that produce about 6-9 dozen fruits a year.  If I planted them in the ground I could get a lot more  and wouldnt have to prune them so much to keep them comapct and managable.  I have Tangerines, Mexican Limes, Plums, Peaches and Pears.  I do all this on a 20 x 80 ft lot despite a huge oak tree on the lot that limits what I can do.

Later this year I am putting in a 8 x 3 foot raised bed a the entry way that will have a mix of veggies tucked in amongst the flowers.  Great looks with some scooby snacks too!  Late this winter I am going to try and put in at least one more 12 x 4 foot raised bed so I can further expand on what I am doing and save even more on my grocery bill.

I also raise rabbits too.  I have the Florida whites which are smaller than New Zealands but have a smaller bone structure and flesh out about as much weight in meat as the larger rabbit does.  The up side is smaller cages for a more compact operation and less feed per a rabbit.  I have 3 does and 1 buck and get between 70-80 rabbits for the freezer a year.  The rabbit doo goes on the garden and the planter pots I have stuff growing in as well.  Great fertilizer and soil amendment.

The best part is I know what I am eating.  I know what went into it.  I have the option of growing tastier varieties, growing them organically with no chemicals or pesticides and I can pick it all at the peak of ripeness for my dinning enjoyment!  So there is a bit of an alternative...

Shows me why we need to return to the small family farm.  I never saw anything so cruel on my families farms or any I worked on.  The large corporations that are responsible just had laws past to make sure all food is raised this way.  The S510 food safety bill and NAIS laws will end the small farm and maybe the right to grow your own food.

My experiences in meat production are varied. I worked at a chicken farm, a hog farm, and I worked on a shrimp boat. The chicken farm and hog farm were a lot more humane and clean than the ones shown on the film. The animals were treated humanely. Killing was done by quick decapitation at night while the birds were disoriented, and it was over quickly. The hogs were killed with the stunning hammers similar to the ones shown in the movie, but it was a quick death. The farm didn't have them penned up in small spaces.

The one that really repulsed me, though, was the shrimp fishing. I personally would like to see all shrimp fishing in the gulf banned. The waste was unbelievable. Tons of marine animals were killed every day as bycatch and this was just dumped over the side and wasted. By far, the most uncaring, environmentally evil, and totally exploitative people I ha ve ever met have been commercial fishermen. The attitude is that if we runout of one kind of fish, well just go after something else.

One other thing. My daughter is a vegetarian and I of course approve of that decision. I like to cook and wanted to know how best to handle a vegetarian diet. In summary, the scenes portrayed in that video show harsh exploitation of animals, but the soy and corn industry is hard on people. The info is readily available if you want details, but at all cost do not eat soy because it is essentially toxic except in small quantities prepared by traditional fermentation methods as with soy sauce and tofu. Also avoid anything with high fructose corn syrup because it interferes with your insulin response in dangerous and fattening ways. A lot of agricultural practices are unsafe for people, like all the pesticides used even in so called organic farming. The list goes on. A vegetarian diet is not necessarily more healthy than a balanced diet including meat, and a vegan diet can be very unhealthy unless done with great knowledge of nutrition.

Just wanted to inform that the term "factory" or corporate farm is often misused in today's view of where our food comes from.  We personally milk 1,500 cows on 2 dairies, and it is all family owned.  There are 5 families represented, and we all work together and combined our assets to make it a go.  Our cows are treated humanely every day by all of our employees, and we welcome visitors and school kids all the time.  You cannot how many parents of the youngsters thank us and ask if they can bring people back to see how milk is produced.  I for one love the fact that I work everyday to feed the people of our land.

Man I can't believe folks get caught up in these bogus videos and documentaries.  I couldn't care less how they treat the animals.

For some reason swampman your response comes as no surprise to me.  ::)

I didn't watch the video. But treat all my animals well. I don't have a problem with killing one for food or to put a old or injured one down but I do so in a humane manner. I believe God expects us to respect all life and conserve the bounty he has so richly blessed us with.

I grew up on a dairy farm and if our cows were treated that way someone would get very hurt. We did all of our own butchering but it was'nt barbaric like most of this. Those in this video are not humans, I think they are psycho and should be put down under.

Great for those with a yard but many if not most live in multi family dwellings . I raise beef cows and buy hay you do not save cash you do know what they eat. The butcher comes to the field shoots the cow in the head with a 30/30 , cuts it throat with a butcher knife and drags it up on a trailor with a winch . Pretty no efficent yes.

The video is not representative of the industry. It is more like finding the worst tape that you can showing police brutality and saying that is how all cops operate. With livestock the better they are cared for and the happier they are the better they grow and produce. I grew up on a farm and like most farms the wellbeing of the animals came before our wellbeing.
