Stupid Q probably wrong area 2.
« on: April 17, 2011, 06:40:57 PM »
I havea  Star 9mm ( says 9mm largo on side) . I was at a gun show today and was told that I would be able to shoot 9mm Largo, 9mm luger and 38 super out of it. Wanted to see if yall had any knowlege in this topic. This is the 1st Star I have ever seen to not come with a ton of problems and I was gonna see if the info I was told was true. Thanks in advance.

I think so--but there may need to be adjustments made.
DO NOT SHOOT 9x23 out of it.

Dusty:  The Star 9mm pistols chambered in the 9mm Largo are not designed to shoot either the 9mm Luger or the 38 Super.  If your pistol has a 9mm/38 cailber marking on the side it will handle both the 9mm Largo and the 38 Automatic - the 38 Super runs at a much higher pressure than the 38 Automatic although both are dimentionally identical, but the Super should not be used in pistols chambered for the 9mm Largo or the 38 Automatic.

You should not use or fire the 9mm Luger in pistols chambered for the 9mm Largo as the cartridge is held in place by the extractor which will break, in fairly short order if you fire 9mm Luger ammo.

There should be a bunch of 9mm Largo ammo still available out there, even though the stuff is old and may not be reloadable.  If you reload however, you can use new Winchester 9x23 brass or any of the 9mm Largo brass case offerings from places like Starline or Grafs, and load your own.  The 9mm Largo can be loaded with 115-125 gn ball to about 1200'/sec and be safe to shoot for both you and the pistol.  HTH.

Thanks for the correction Mikey. I did not know that.
That is one reason I don't care for the Star---it has variations within each model.

Ditto on what Mikey said.  The older military contract Star's are well made.  9mm Largo is not hard to find, just Google it.  I have put almost a case of military ball from the 60's thru mine with zero problems.

All good info so far - just as a minor note to add: if you reload, you can reload 9mm Largo with 9mm Luger dies relatively easily.  I used to have a Star Modelo Super in 9mm Largo and that was how I fed it.  Some Starline 9mm Largo brass was my only initial investment - the dies, power, and bullets from my 9mm Luger stuff all worked fine.
