What really is sweet about a load like this is that it is such a soft shooting combination.

Randy, it seems the 240grn DC, is shooting about the same as
the 300grn .45DC. Why not try out the 220grn .40cal DC. It
might even be the most accurate with the salvage also? If you
need to borrow some let me know. LOL. :lol:

The 220 shoots just as well (sub-1") with the same load. With the low recoil and 1:24 twist of the Savage, there is just no reason not to go with the longer, higher BC bullets.

The Encore will shoot the 240 DC well also, but it takes 120-125 grains or so of T 7 to get the same velocity, and that is getting a bit stout.

Naturally, I have a preference as to the “one combination,” that’s all it is. It is 46 grains of XMP-5744 pushing the 45 / 50 300 grain Dead Center. It is a sub-MOA loading with a 200 yard 6” MPBR, mild recoil, and as far as game harvesting—retains over 1100 foot pounds of kinetic energy to over 400 yards without going sub-sonic, still at 1300 fps.

Randy, I'm new to this game & I noticed you used 45.2 grains of 5744 with the 300 grain bullet to yield 2050 FPS & approxomately 45 grains with the 240 grain bullet yet the 300 grainer was 20 feet faster. Am I missing something or would the .2 grains push the extra 60 grains of bullet that much faster?

Smokeless powder responds dramatically to backpressure.

Amazing as it may seem, a 50 grain 5744 charge with a 40 / 50 240 grain yielded 2118 fps. That IDENTICAL weighed 50 grain charge resulted in 2082 fps with a 100 grain heavier bullet, the 340 grain 45 / 50 Dead Center. A whopping loss of only 36 fps for a bullet 100 grains heavier, with virtually identical trajectory. The massive increase in energy is on the chart above.

The most vivid difference is the totally different sabot material and thickness in the 40 / 50 vs. the 45 / 50, as well as the bullet weight. So, yes, it is possible to get actually slightly higher velocities with a heavier bullet with roughly equivalent powder charges of 5744-- with a sabot change.

Those Dead Centers sound great but for a dollar a shot, no thanks.
They must be stirling silver plated, with a gold core.
I will have to make do with sst or xtp until Precision gets real with the prices.

If I found a better, more accurate bullet-- I'd shoot it.
