Am considering one of these two big bore rounds, probably in a Marlin Lever action. I would be very interested in hearing your advice and experiences, etc., in reference to these two rounds.

Any advice would be helpful. Happy New Year to all!

I think as for proformance, I would say the 475. It is a slightly longer case and is loaded to a higher pressure in pre-loaded (factory, buffalo bore etc.)form.

I would have to say in defence that the 480 ruger will have a better ammo supply in time.

To sum it up if proformance is what you want go 475 if you want avalible ammo over the counter go with the 480. :wink:

Since Marlin is now making a rifle that chambers both why should you have to chose? The .480 from a rifle should give ballistics equal to the .475 in a handgun easily and at lower pressure. If you are going to use jacketed bullets there might be a reason why the .475 would be superior but if you're gonna use cast bullets you'll find the extra velocity that might be available in the .475 over the .480 is of little value as there is just no reason to push them that fast.

Graybeard: Am I to understand that both rounds can be used in the same rifle, sort like shooting 38's in a .357 mag? I did not realise this was the case.

Correct. That's how it should work. They use the same case dimensions except the .480 is 1.285" long and the .475 is 1.4" long. That ain't much difference really.

Keep in mind that these cartridges BOTH operate at fairly high chamber pressures, so it might not be a good idea to shoot alot of .480 through it if you want to shoot .475's also. You could end up with a ring in the chamber. It's not the exact same thing as loading low pressure 38/44 Specials in the beavier .357/44 Magnum wheelgun or rifle. This might or might not cause problems, but it is something for you to consider.

From my point of view on this matter, once you've got some brass it should last a long time unless loaded to full pressure at all times, so why not use the Linebaugh casing.

I just saw that marlin is comming out with a 480/475. I guess I will have to put that on my wish list. It can shoot both! Let us know how it shoots if ya get one! :-D
