M & T,  Thanks for the info on the Dahlgens.  Were any Dahlgren mounted on front pivot Barbettes like those at Charleston, S.C.?

Cpt Ed,  I have you down for one.  Thank you,  Dom

If you are talking about this one which was recovered from the sunken wreck of the experimental Federal ironclad, Keokuk, placed on this iron carriage in White Point Gardens at the tip of the Charleston penninsula, no.  We are not aware of anything like that existing during the Civil War, however in later years the parks commissions around the country would use anything that was available and free, like this carriage which was government surplus and obsolete by the late 1870s.

However, the possibility for one or maybe several mounted on traditional Confederate carriages such as the 9" Dahlgren mounted on the Wood, Seacoast, Center-Pintle, Barbette, Carriage of a type found up on the Terraplein at Old Fort Jackson which covers the approaches along the Savannah River, a few miles east of Savannah, Georgia, is good.  A very large number of U.S. Naval tubes were confiscated by southern forces when they took over the Norfolk Navy Yard in 1861.  If that yard had been a U.S. Army Armory with Model 1859 Iron, Seacoast, Front Pintle, Barbette Carriages, the Confederates would have used them too.

Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

Here's an up-date.  I have an order in with the water-jet to cut the carriage blanks.  I will post photos of these when I pick them up.  I will be making one or 2 Dahlgrens at a time per week along with other orders.  This project will start sometime towards the end of June or early July depending on the intensity of website orders for the 4th of July.  Dom

Ray,  These will be built one or two at a time over the summer and early fall so there is no quantity limit or cut off date.  I don't like to build several at a time.  Quantity runs only save time in the machine set-up and my set-up time is minimal for these.  There are still the same number of holes to drill and welds to make in each one, whether I make one or fifty.  :)

Dwayne,  I have you down for one.  Thanks.

I visited the water jet Co. and picked up some new designed carriage plate blanks.  I will start building these in a couple of weeks.

I finished #1 of the production run today.  I made a few changes.  First , I installed rivets and increased the amount of them to match the full scale original.  I eliminated the eye bolts [they were ugly], moved the transom [breast] plate in between the side plates and changed to smaller wheels.  I test fired the gun with 30 grains 3F max ball loads [with lead ball] and the barrel stayed on each time so I also eliminated the trunnion caps.  They were ugly too. Photo of the new Dahlgren below.

Right you are, Dom!  Mike and I found this Iron, Marsilly Carriage in the IOOF Cemetery in San Luis Obispo, California.  Although it's sporting an Ordnance Board 32 Pdr, Cannon of 4,500 Lbs instead of a Dahlgren, it's an all original and authentic 6-holer with Hex Nuts.  The eight-holers we have seen sport the same nuts.

Mike_60, Welcome!

It is not too late to get one.  I should have yours sometime in late Sept or early October.  That is where my backlog is to.

I spoke with my wife about me wanting to get one of your guns and she was a little surprised.  You see, I don't have any mortars or cannons yet but I've secretly wanted some for quite awhile - unbeknownst to her.  And while explaining why I was wanting one of these (instead of another AR or something) she chimed in and informed me I should just buy two.  She knows me pretty well.  While I'm generally a generous person especially to my grand kids I tend not to share 'my toys' very well.  So she told me I should just get the second one now and avoid the tussles later.  So please put me down for two (assuming pricing is around what you alluded to in the thread) and the later in the year is the better for me.

Thanks,
Mike
