Here's a 50 caliber Dahlgren Gun I made. I cut and drilled the barrel from a solid piece of 1018. Barrel length is 6-1/4". These small cannons are a pleasure to make. The Dahlgren barrel in the bottom photo will be mounted on a Barbette carriage. It's 36 caliber.

Always a favorite naval gun of our's, Mike and I agree that this is one of the best looking cannon you have made Dom. Sign us up for one each. Is this a scale 9" Dahlgren Shell Gun or scale 11", Dom. The 9" was a real favorite of the Civil War navies, both of them. If a scale 9", this shell gun would be just about 1:20 scale, a nice even scale. By 1864, a total of 1,200 of them had been produced. By comparison, only 1,157 Napoleon 12 Pdrs. were produced during the war by all six founders.

Dominick, you do realize that the seacoast boys really like to shoot their cannons a lot. Knowing this and the fact that back in the day, when eroded to .400", the right vent was filled with molten zinc, tin or lead and the left vent was then drilled through, we are wondering if, err,....ah...........

Will you be providing this important service, Dom?

Dom, do you realize how very, very rare it is for me to get up before 6 A.M. to stare at a cannon, any cannon? I think you have created a perfect storm with this one. Do you have at least 50 Micro-Dahlgren sized boxes stacked up in your shipping dept.?

Tracy, I'm happy to hear this and am looking forward to building these. When I looked at the first completed one, I felt it was well worth the effort. As far as the scale, I figured on these being 9" guns. I'm not too familiar with the 11" guns. Were these 11" guns mounted on the 2 wheel iron trucks on Barbette carriages only? Also, did these guns have a muzzle flare like the 9" guns or were they like the 15" and 20" with no flare?

Dom, the scale you picked is perfect for the 9" Dahlgren Shell Gun and the painting, the historical photo and the modern pics we have taken around the United States which can be seen below, prove that the muzzle flair you turned on your Micro-Dahlgren much more closely resembles the 9" than the 11".

Very little muzzle flair can be seen in this famous painting depicting the battle off the coast of France in 1864 in which the Federal Steam Frigate, Kearsarge sent the Notorious Confederate commerce raider, CSS Alabama to the bottom with a few well placed shells from her Pivot Gun, an 11 Inch Dahlgren Shell Gun. Photo of painting from the Naval Historical Center.

The historical photo here from LOC.com is of an 11" Dahlgren Shell Gun mounted in Federal Fort Putnam on the northern end of Morris Island in 1863 or 1864 where it could shell CSA held, Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, SC. Not much muzzle flair here, either. Dom, this is the shifting pivot carriage that all 11" Dahlgren's were mounted on in Federal service. Just like the 200 Pdr. Parrott Naval Rifles, they were too heavy for the Marsilly type tail dragger carriages, wood or metal.

In June of 2007 Mike and I found this excellent 11" Dahlgren at a small park in Exeter, New Hampshire. We studied it thoroughly and noticed that it had much less of a muzzle flair than a 9" Dahlgren that we saw later in Hartford, Connecticut.

This 9" Dahlgren we found on the Campus of Trinity College in Hartford, CT is one of the best cared for naval guns we have ever found. With perfect paint, clear markings and a super carriage, recently replaced, it is one of two on that campus. My uncle, a Coast Guard Captain, went here for two years before he transferred to the Naval Academy in 1938.

Mike and I found this 9" Dahlgren Shell Gun across the bay from the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California. We think Dom's beautiful Micro-Dahlgrens look very much like the 9" in this picture, larger muzzle flair and all. A 24 Pdr. naval gun for a Sloop of War resides there as well.

Back in 82'-84' when I worked at Mare Island Shipyard (RADCON) they opened a long sealed ammo bunker and inside was a treasure trove of sailing ship parts including what looked liked cannon, carriges and more. We only got to peak inside the door and it was resealed. I tried to find a way to get inside but they did not think I needed to check to see if anything was radioactive. Wonder if those tubes in the picture was from the bunker? Wonder what happened to the rest?
