357 Maximum reloaders
« on: April 20, 2011, 03:17:01 PM »
Question? What reloading dies do you use to reload for 357 Maximum? Regular 357, or is there a special die for the Maximum?
HELP!
Got one and don't know what to use.
Thanks, Robert

The Max has it's own die set.

Yes that's true, but....most 357 Mag dies can be adjusted to work with the Max. Just watch which bullets you load and which seating stem is used. Some Mag dies sets don't come with a seating stem for loading pointy bullets and the noses get smashed.

Thanks, Dinny

You'll find that most 357Mag dies will work for the Maxi, I use the Lee deluxe set except for seating pointy bullets as Dinny pointed out.

I didn't think the mag dies would open up enough for the max.
That's good to know though... I have mag dies that I could use for my max.
Thanks Tim and Dinny. ;D

I have a set of 357 dies that were made before the maximum was thought of,
They work just fine. Watch seating stem. Datil

I emailed Lee on this. They replied that my Lee die will load 38 Special, 357 Magnum, and 357 Maximum, no problem

Ah, the Bank of Knowledge! I love it!
Thanks so much guys, it is so nice to have all this knowledge at my hands, and at no charge!
I have 357 mag dies, but didn't know if the extra length would be an issue.
Thanks again, Robert

10-4 on the Lee 38/357 Dies working on the 357 Maxi.  Also have found no need for a full length resize, just a partial resize to provide enough neck tension to hold the jacketed bullets in place.  I don't resize at all for the lead bullets, chamber is tight enough the brass doesn't expand that much so the bullets stay in place w/o a resize.  One needs to verify that your fired brass will chamber okay before doing a partial  or no resize.  Having a 100 rounds of reloads that will not chamber is a good way to make friends with a bullet puller. >:(

10-4 on what Tom, bikerbeans, said.  My carbide Lee dies work fine for my Maxi.  I've loaded both 158 and 180 gr, bullets.  No problem.

FWIW file:

The LEE .357 Magnum Speed Die works quite well loading .357 MAX also. Got a spare seating stem from the factory and modified it for the pointy SSP bullets.

I got RCBS, it says 38 special to 357 max on the box. Also used it to load some 38 long colt.
