MARK III 22/45 BOLT RELEASE
« on: April 21, 2011, 03:42:54 AM »
Is it ok to release the bolt by only pushing the release button, or should I be pulling back on the bolt as well?   I prefer the one-handed method of only pushing the button, but some folks say that will wear the bolt stop out as it is not designed to operate this way.  I think that a gun that is designed to be a 1911 trainer should be ok to use one-handed.

I bought a pair of 22/45s when they first became available in my area. That's been quite a few years ago. Mine have been used mostly for falling plate and steel challenge rim fire matches. Both matches require 4-8 reloads per stage. I use the slide release every time. If they wear out, I'll spend a couple bucks and replace the parts. I'm not changing my routine.

If I'm just closing the bolt empty after inspecting, I will ease it shut by hand.  If I'm chambering the first round I let her fly one handed figuring the act of stripping the round from the mag will slow the bolt enough to avoid wear or damage.  After all, this is what it does after the first and subsequent trigger pulls.

I figure there are many auto feeders that should not be allowed to slam shut while empty, and I think I remember reading in my M1 Garand literature something about not allowing this.  Makes sense to me anyhow.

direct quote from Ruger.

"One must use Caution when operating the bolt stop, and the
correct use of release button. If the bolt stop button is used incorrectly, the
internal piece of the bolt stop will become rounded, and will not lock bolt open
after last round fired. Once the bolt is locked open The correct procedure for
releasing of the bolt is to pull the bolt back then pull down bolt stop release
button, then release bolt allowing it to slam shut. If you should need further
assistance please call our Service Department at 928/778-6555 between 8:00 -
4:00, MST Monday thru Friday, at a time convenient for you.  A Ruger
Representative will be happy to help you."

To be more specific, I never allow the bolt to slam forward on an empty chamber. I'm sure Ruger knows what they're talking about, but haven't had to replace my bolt stops on any of the Mkls or lls I've owned. Maybe I don't shoot them enough!  lol

I'm 76 and I use the slide release every time. I don't think it will wear out in my lifetime.  ;D
