What Automatic 22 Pistol?
« on: December 28, 2003, 01:57:07 AM »
I am interested in an accurate shooting 22 automatic. One that I might put a red dot on. I have a t/c with a 22 and a red dot, but I would also like to have an auto. I have looked at a number of them in the various auctions etc. but sure would like some outside help. Thanks.

Rev:

What specifically are you looking for in this gun?

An accurate/high-end pistol to shoot bullseye...or a picnic gun to roll tin cans?

I would like to have a bulls eye shooter with little money invested. I know that the two normally don't run together. So I guess a fair shooter that with a red dot would provide a good degree of accuracy and a lot of fun.

Rev:

Well...I'd say you couldn't go wrong with a Ruger.  However, you will probably find just as many folks out there that swear by a Browing Buckmark or S&W Model 41.  Both make fine guns.

I own a few Rugers and have put a LOT of rounds down-range through each of them.  I have found them to be very reliable regardless of the type of ammo I run through them.  Do Rugurs have problems every now and then...sure, but they ALL do on occasion...period.  Most of the problems reported on this forum are usually ammo or maintenance releated.  Anyway, I've been real happy shooting a Ruger Govt. Model Mark II with an Ultra-DOT for some time now but, I'm upgrading to a European target pistol....got the "bug" I guess.

Best advice I could give you is for you to spend some quality time at a gun shop, and handle as many pistols as you can...of various types/manufactures.  Find one that "fits" you.  Also, try to spend some time at a range too...that will give you a good feel for how various guns operate (or not).

Once you get a feel for what's out there, you can start narrowing down a price range for the gun and sight.  You can buy a NICE Ruger/Browning, with a nice red-dot, for less than $500.  If you can do without all of the bells and whistles, for much less.  If you do buy a Ruger, I would budget another $75 to upgrade the trigger assy...the Rugers are a little rough out of the box.

Whatever you decide, these guns will usually put rounds through the same hole...it's usually the operator that makes the difference.  Good luck with your search....

Be Safe!   ...Chris    :D

Have had all common U.S. 22 auto's, and I think the best value is the S+W 22 series. Have experience with 4 of them, and all are similar performers. They are accurate(as good as the 41 that I sold)  They have a full length Weaver mount on the barrell(easy to add a dot sight) They have great open sights. The push button barrell release makes it easy to clean from the chamber end(unlike the Buckmark) They have great trigger pulls(unlike the Rugers) The magazines have been very reliable(unlike the High Standards) And they are inexpensive(mine was lessthan $200 like new in box)

Hey Rev,
Get yourself a Buck Mark Standard and forget about the red dot.

Depends on what your looking for and how much you want to spend. There are many of the old High Standards to be had for under $500. Many seem to like to reliabilty of the Ruger but there are also a lot that hate to take the gun down. If you can find someone who will let you field strip one and put it back together absolutely try to do it. Plus the Ruger has a different grip angle that doesn't apeal to everyone. The Ruger MKII/45 has a 45 style grip on it, but it's a polymer grip so you can't upgrade it to a target style if you would want to. The Brownings are nice a only slightly more than the Rugers. They are definetely lighter. The Buckmark with the 7-1/2" barrel balances easier than the Ruger with the 6" barrel. Like said earlier handle as many as you can and gather as much info as you can and pick they one that you like the best. If you can also shoot as many as you can, but this isn't always possible.

I can't comment on any others, but I am very pleased with my MarkII Slabside topped with Ultra-Dot.  It lacks nothing as far as I'm concerned, and is a real tackdriver.   NIB comes tapped with rings and base as you see here:

I own a Pardini SPE (used) bought for $700 w/red dot.  Very accurate.  Before that I owned a High Standard bought for $550.  Also, very accurate but finicky when it came to ammo.

If you own a 1911 you might want to look into a marvel conversion unit and have the trigger tuned by a gunsmith.  The Marvel costs about $400 and a trigger job might run you about $50-$100.  Marvel is arguably the MOST accurate pistol available at 50 yards and you do not need an FFL to transfer since it does not come with a frame.
