Dinny offline temporarily
« on: April 23, 2011, 02:27:48 PM »
Dinny's PC crashed recently, he's been relying on his laptop for a while now, it crashed today  :-\ , so he'll have limited internet access thru work only for a while.

I'm there too, PC desktop wouldn't  boot Windows, all the space being hogged by malware they say. Been on a borrowed I Pad for a week and just ordered a Mac, I've had it with Windows based systems.
Lot of folks going down of late, somethin's up.
FWIW, around here the geeks have all gone to Macs so I took a hint, hope it works.

Me too!  I have all my data files saved on a stick drive and I am waiting for the courage to arrive so I can wipe out my operating system files and reload them. :o  Now that my taxes are done no real excuse so probably on Monday.  I guess worst case I buy a new laptop.

That is too bad. I know he lives in Indiana, but way down South of Indy. I live up in the North East corner. I have considerable computer experience and lots of spare parts...but with out getting together, I just can not be of much help.

Dinny - I do not know if you can read this, but the power supply and Hard drives are two very common failures. If it does nothing, probably the power supply. If you get a screen but does not go into Windows, probably the hard drive or files corrupted on it. Not always, but these are common failures.

Good Luck and Good Computing ;D

Hate to see any member down.   :(   , Harddrives and powersupplies do die.

There are alot of good anti virus and anti malware programs out there folks. Get them use them. Yes, Mac's don't have alot of the virus and malware problems.

GOOD LUCK DINNY!!!

Two weeks ago I spent three days, averaging 5 hours each  with DELL techs trying to fix a issue with my lap top... I KNOW its software and the DVD drive is shot... I told them that when we started... I still have software issues, but I now have a brand new DVD drive and Mal ware software... We had to wait to get the DVD before we could reinstall Windows. but I was never really "down".

Good luck brother!!

Thanks for the heads up Tim!! Your always there for a member!! You rock!

Dinny has a new drive for the PC, but waiting for a restore disc from Dell, the laptop is a mini less than a year old, Dell support said it's a drive related failure also.  :-X

I have used Macs since 1986, and now I have a Mac Mini that also lets me run Windows at the same time, I need the Windows for work. That is a trick that just can't be done with a Windows box. Also when I get a little more cash, I will get another Mac Mini and run it as a Windows system, then have one keyboard, mouse and monitor to run all three computers - older Mac Mini running older OSX, the new Minis to run the new OSX and Windows. All for about a grand, when a few years back it was multiple thousands!

We live in a wondrous age of computing, when they don't get hacked!!!!!!  >:(

Mac computers have hard drive issues and power supply issues, just like PC's. There is nothing magical about a Mac. They do not have as much malware, because the hackers do not waste their time with them, because there is just not enough of them to bother with. If you are prudent with what you look at on the web and e-mails and have anti-virus and anti malware software in place (there are free ones, you know), you do not have problems with PC's either. If you run Windows on a Mac, it will be the same as running Windows on a PC. It is not the hardware that is a problem as far as viruses and malware; it is the OS and the software it runs. Be careful about what sites you go to and have some "anti" software in place and you will not have issues. I have been running PC's for years and do not have any malware or virus issues. I have 5 PC's running right now and a lap top that runs occasionally - no problems. I do have hardware problems from time to time. Running a Mac is a personal choice, my daughter will love you for it. She works for the Apple Store in Chicago. But do not blame PC's for bad practices that you cause. I choose the PC, because that is what the manufacturing industry runs on and there are is a lot more software available for the PC. Good Luck and Good Computing

Many years ago I bought a then cheap $800 Windows 98 laptop on my Amex card. Amex doubles the warranty and just refunds the money to your account when something breaks. You do need to keep the original box, warranty, receipt, bill, etc. And you cannot have an extended warranty. Short story. The power supply has failed in every cheap laptop that I bought since then and been 100% refunded by Amex. I always buy the cheapest promo model, which probably has much to do with it. Every brand. Dell, HP, Compaq, Acer, etc. Anyway, I am now on my 6th or 7th laptop, a Windows 7 machine that overheats and will be returned soon. This one cost $300 though. So over the years, I have just been getting money back and new laptops every 1+ years.

I have Dell for the work laptop and the Dell extended warranty, the good one where they come to your job or house, it is definitely worth it. I remember being in a hotel room 2k miles from home. Someone knocked my laptop off the table and the screen broke. 1 call, a couple of hours later, a tech was in the hotel swapping the screen, all covered under warranty.

My wife does not have a laptop, she checks a different one out from work every night. You can imagine the abuse these things take. They are MacBook Airs and they hold up really well. The hard drive does not do a whole lot though, everything is stored in the cloud, and it has a flash drive instead of a spinning hard drive, so that Mac is not susceptible to hard drive issues.

Hey Guys,
I'm back online with the Dell desktop! It suffered a hard drive failure and I lost all my daughter's baby pics. Not to fret, we emailed many of them to family and they're sending them all back to us in time. I have learned a few valuable lessons. #1, back-up your data, #2, document every one of your conversations with Dell CS...they lie! #3, never buy another Dell computer. I have researched the reviews on my OEM hard drive and it has a high amount of DOA and a short lifespan. Many of the IT folks I have spoken to recently have stated that Dell uses low-quality hardware components. A Mac is in my future... Dell is sending a tech to my home to replace the HD in my laptop, and I had to fight for hours to get that...

Thanks, Dinny

I am glad you are back up again too ;) I do not deal with CS on my computers, I build my own. Mac computers are generally more expensive than PC's, but you generally get better components - better reliability. If you buy top of the line components for a PC, they can be as reliable as an Apple computer. For the most part, you get what you pay for. If you but a bargain basement computer for $400, you are going to get the cheapest components they can put together. You are not going to buy a Mac for that kind of money because they do put better components in. This computer I am on has a solid state hard drive for the OS, pretty reliable. I also spent over $100 for the power supply alone. You get what you pay for. I backup all valuable information, I had to learn the hard way too, but I learned my lesson many years ago. If it is really valuable (like pictures) I not only back them up on an external drive, I burn them to DVD too. External drives can go bad too. If all you are going to do is get on the internet and do a little printing, put together a Linux box. No external attacks there. Just put together reliable parts get your choice of Linux distributions for free and install. Good Luck to you.

Dinny, Our new I-Mac should be here Monday. Already we have several comms from Apple (Dell was conspicuous by their absence). I just want a 'puter as a tool, not to be another challenge in my life.
I'll let you know how the learning curve goes.
BTW, cordless keyboard, mouse and printer! No more spagetti/access problem!

My desk top crashed the first week of March.  It took till last week to get it fixed.  Computer shop in Fairbanks had to wipe the drive and reinstall the operating system.  When I brought it home it would not come up.  When I took it in it worked for them, here at home it would not work.  We went through this till I finally said you keep it and bring me a new one, it was under warranty.  Finally a week ago yesterday they sent someone to my house.  The guy brought in the computer and set it up here at my place.  Right off the bat he discovered it was the gaming card, causing the problem.  They had not hooked up the gaming feature at the shop.  Took seven weeks to get it fixed.  During that time I was using my Net Book.  (Smaller than a Lap Top).

Another point to consider. If we are independent enough to tinker with handi rifles and the like, it is within our capability to install linux. I use the UBUNTU distribution which for most machines works as installed and is totally free!

It even brings slow old hardware back to life.
