Last hunt of spring.
« on: April 23, 2011, 03:26:56 PM »
Well melting has set in serious now. It has stayed close or above freezing for the last couple nights, much warmer in the day and we got rain.  Darn, I had hoped to squeak out 1 more weekend with my youngest this time.  But its blowing hard and with 40+ degrees I expect our snogos would bog seriously.

Here is a brief note on Last weekend:

My oldest son and I went out to the dome Friday  (15th) and spent the night.  I took out some steaks and a half gas drum for a new outside fireplace. We grilled steaks, cut and split some fire wood as well as digging ice and snow off the dome platform.

Next day dawned bright sunny and warm and we headed across the creek and up to an abandoned  cabin site on the top of the little mountain there. First time to get there.  Then we explored around a bit and finally found a small flock of ptarmigan.  We each got 2 before it was time to head back to camp for clean up chores and to head home.   It got up close to 50 F and my boots soaked thru from the very wet snow cover.  But it was a blast.

The week before we went up to check the dome for the first time since Dec moose season.  There must have been 1,000 pounds of ice and snow on top -lots of ice from the rains and melts last winter. Good thing for the reinforcing column inside.  Even so one 2x4 end nearly punched thru the roof.  The dome was so weighed down that the front door had sprung open a few inches and some snow had blown in.  Luckily not much snow and no varmints got inside to make a mess.  Luckily the inside snow had melted enough we could open the door and cleanup.

A friend of ours has been flying his little T Craft (65 hp) to Kulukuk Bay and getting clams.  Fun in the sun!

took a while to get my pics small enuf for My Hosted to accept them.

Good for you!  Got out with the boy and brought home some birds.  What rifle is he carrying?  Glad you got the snow & ice off the dome in time.  That snow load can be a lot heavier than folks realize.

Thanks for posting that.  I miss Alaska, but it's nice to be able to see what is going on there.

Winter, its a CZ Scout.  My boy is growing, I need to put a pad on the butt so he'll fit better.  Solid little rifle tho.  Yup we've had rain now and nights staying above freezing so spring is coming.  Haven't seen any ducks but saw some seagulls in town today.
