Picky Handi Rifle?
« on: April 23, 2011, 03:27:46 PM »
Do any of you have a really picky Handi Rifle?
I've got an SB2 in .280 Rem that I got for a steal a few years back at only $155. I've taken a few deer with it and I love the rifle, it's just the pickiest gun I've ever owned. I've only tried about five different bullets, but so far the only one it'll shoot is the 140 grain Ballistic Silvertip. Heck, I can't even get 160 grain Accubonds on the paper at 100 yds. Now I only hunt whitetails, so the Ballistic Silvertip is fine, I'd just like a few more options. I also realize that there are many others out there to try.
I really do love the Handis and will likely end up with a few more before it's over with.
Just wondering if anyone else has ran into this?

Yep"er , have a 243 that Hate's anything " Nosler " and a 223 that only likes 55 V-max . On the flip side , I have 2 - 270s that will eat anything you feed them - from 90g to 130g and any brand .

As for my 45/70 , it does better with heavy - cast bullets , 405g and up .

Good to know. I'll keep looking, but at least I found one that it likes. I can get 1.5" groups with them so I'm pretty happy either way.

I won't keep a rifle like that. If they won't shoot with different ammo I get rid of them.

Well, I'm kind of attached to it. I killed my first deer with it. Plus, I REALLY love the caliber and don't have the funds to buy a more expensive rifle at the moment.

I do like a rifle that'll shoot different bullets well though. I've got a Weatherby Vanguard in .30-06 that I'm convinced would shoot a rock accurately if you could find one the right size.

Same here on my .243. A couple will group around 2" on a good day, most others 6-10".

I wouldn't own a rifle that grouped 6 to 10 inches.  That would be 18 to 30 inches at 300.  I may be 70, but I can throw rocks better than that.....yeah, I wish.

As I've gotten older, I lean toward fatter bullets and shorter ranges in order to hit what I want to shoot at!.....So far, so good! ;D
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.
