how to shorten a 336 magazine tube?
« on: April 24, 2011, 04:38:47 PM »
Looking to shorten the mag tube on my 336 30-30 and eliminate the upper band, like on an xlr.

For those who have done this how much did you take off of the tube and how much off of the spring?

Thanks, Matt.

My mag tube is bobbed to half length, resulting in a "button style" wherein only a very little bit extends beyond the fore-end wood.  It is hung from the barrel in the fashion of the MX/XLR series, with a factory Marlin MX mag tube hanger boss utilized and a corresponding slightly oversized dovetail slot cut into the barrel to accomodate it.  I retained the rear carbine band, which was relieved for barrel clearance and D&T'd on the bottom for a swivel stud.  About a thrid of the mag tube spring was cut off, and a new Hornady FTX friendly plastic follower was utilized.

The result is a solid MOA performer with factory Federal 170's and 1.5 inches with my preffered FTX bullets.  The former tendency to vertically string shots has been eliminated.

Why do you want to do that? Why not just sell yours and buy a 336SC......plenty of good ones out there for sale.
