Found some barrels for sale

I found some 16" steel barrels for sale, originally manufactured by "US Naval Gun Factory W.N.Y." around 1943-1944.  Here are the details: 

Qty 14ea Tubes and weigh approx 236,900 lbs ea and are 816 inches long, Tube thickness being approx 15in. at the breach and 4in. at the muzzle, Metal content is approx, Fe 98.40, Ni 0.10, Si 0.60, Mn 0.10, Cr 0.20, Mo 0.30, Co 0.10 W 0.10.

Unfortunately, demil is required as condition of the sale, but I thought I would give you a chance to look/bid just in case.  ;)  Pretty cool pieces of history!

The first bid for these was $150 but it's up to $291K which is out of my league by a few orders of magnitude.  Demilling wouldn't have been a problem unless they wanted them cut into 4' long pieces.

But 16" bore was just too much.

it would be really cool tho to have a 1/4 inch thick slice off of the gun to hang on the wall.  but at over 200,000 lbs a barrel, i am not sure what else will happen to them but scrap metal. maybe we will see a few sections for sale in the future from dealers.

This may sound funny but why the demil??. There are only 4 ships in this class that can use these bbls and unless
some multi billonaire has the bucks to pony up for one ship, if ever one was to come up for sale. Even a 4' piece cut for a mortar would weigh a lot. And 16" shells aren't exactly growing on trees. Frank

rampa room artillery (hence known as rra) that is a great idea  8) . There are people selling wrecked fenders from NASCAR . I'll bet thin sections of barrel would sell  ;D Clocks ,end tables , boat anchors  ::)

Mounted in a nice shadow box maybe .
     
.........How about a group buy ? We could keep it at DD's Gopher Ranch .

That way he and Ernie can saw it up and then sell it at the Cut Bank triple c shoot .(im drawing a blank right now on the official name .)    :o 8) ???

We can put anything you like on the muzzle side for only a small additional charge.   ;D

The tough part would be finding the breech and a ground mount.  At 816" and 239,000 pounds they are from 16"/50 Caliber Mark 2 or Mark 7 guns.  I think the tubes were the same.  With the breech they would have been about 30,000 pounds heavier.

There is one at the Ordnance Museum at Aberdeen Proving Grounds on a Coastal Artillery mount.  I think the Aberdeen one is a 15" one though regardless of this photo's caption.

All these were made at the Army cannon factory in Waterveliet, NY across the Hudson from Albany.  At one time during the Cold War they made 90+% of the Free World's 155mm and larger cannon.

The naval gun tubes were floated down the Hudson to Navy Island where the Navy had a ammunition dump or directly to the Brooklyn Naval Yard.
