Haven't heard, it was north of me.  I know someone who has a sister just south of Birmingham and she found a bank statement in her yard from Tuscaloosa about 75 miles away.

I talked to Matt this morning, Bill and Faye are fine, they won't likely have power for a couple days and internet service for a couple weeks or more. Matt's home, which is on Graybeard's property did have some roof damage from an earlier storm which he's working on today.

Thanks for posting the news about Bill and his family.   My first thoughts and prayers went for them, as I had no idea of their actual location in regard to the tornadoes.

Ditto on the thanks for the info.  I PM'd Bill and was getting a little worried since he hasn't replied.  I was watching the storms on TV go right over his area enroute to mine as the usually do.  Fortunately they passed just north or just south of me.

Good to hear. I think POW POW is also somewhere around Birmingham and saw a post from him so things must be better further South.
Things are on the up and up because they are restoring power to the hospitals already. Also more good news is highs in the low 70's and sunny. So they aren't uncomfortable without power. I believe GB and family are outside of Anniston. Restoring power to the base will be a priority so the folks in the general area may get power sooner than other parts of the state since they are part of an important power grid. Last I heard was 7 days for Huntsville. So a couple days is good news.

My son was in his dorm hallway in Tuscaloosa about a mile north of the one that hit McFarland/ Skyland / Alberta.
My house is about a mile north of where one hit Cahaba Heights / Vestavia.
Wife and I would have been in the basement but we were at the beach for our anniversary.
A few families from church had some damage, but they are safe and have good insurance.
Just talked to a buddy who was headed to the funeral of a lady who was in a trailer that trees fell on.
Finding a lot of pieces of shingles in my yard that aren't mine.

I have one word for our situation during the storms...BLESSED!  The morning storm came right over our house and did some minor damage to our roof, took out the power lines, took down a bunch of trees, and destroyed our blue berry sign.  Notice everything I mentioned is REPLACEABLE!  Our children slept like babies during the first storm and were well out of harms way by the time the mile wide twister ripped through our neighbors behind us.  There is complete devastation on three sides of us.  We are on the back side of Websters Chapel which has ONE house left standing in it.  There are houses on either side of us right down the road that has trees down on top of them, roofs gone, and a little bit further down just leveled.

I have never seen this much devastation up close.  Men and women from all over the US are here working day and night to clear debris and reconnect the power and cable.  It is truly humbling to see how life can change in an instant and we as people are powerless to stop such a strong force of nature.  Unlike the stories I have seen on TV of displaced people complaining and requesting a hand out, we see people working together to get things done.  It is amazing to me, but people with NOTHING left are camping out in their yard under some tarps. My grandfather saw them and stopped to let them know that he had an empty trailer they could stay in rent free, and he was told thanks but no thanks that it is spring and they were just gonna camp out while they rebuilt.  They said they had everything they needed right there on their land.   I think ole Hank said it best when he said Country folks can survive.  ;)

My youngest son is in the Alabama National Guard.  Got called up.  He missed his finals in school, but they said they would give him his grade average for the semister.  He might be called up all summer.  It will take months to years to rebuild some areas.  Monitary damage estimates have already passed Katrina.  Maybe more people in the south will now rebuild homes with basements.

In a lot of cases the water table is to high in Bama for basements. If the high rainfall and clay soil doesn't get you, the underground rivers boil up as wet weather springs and turn the basements into nifty little indoor swimming pools. I think most people that can afford shelters go with the little prefab one piece things you bury in the ground. They are very pricey though. A few people install septic tanks and run pvc pipes up top for ventilation. Well they are concrete storm shelters, but made by a septic tank place. Same floor plan anyhow.  :D

I have heard A LOT of amazing survival stories surrounding the storms, but your comment reminded me of one of the most amazing ones.  My cousins that are twins both live in a small community called Spring Garden.  Several years ago we had a Palm Sunday Tornado that wiped out much of it and a small community called Goshen.   These girls were in the church when it came down years ago.

Today Amanda lives in a one level home and Amy lived in a two story brick house with a basement beneath.  Amanda called Amy the day of the storm and demanded that she and her family come to her house immediately.  Amy laughed at Amanda saying she was much safer in her basement.  Amanda was hysterical and threw such a fit that Amy loaded up her two small children and went to check on Amanda.  Within 20 minutes after they arrived at Amanda's, Amy's neighbors called her and told her that her house was demolished.  The majority of the debris had fallen inside the basement.

I've heard people say that about basements.  However, you can use a concrete ceiling with rebar to keep that from happening.  Most basements today aren't block, but poured in one piece using removeable molds.  This can easily have rebar installed and bent over to pour a concrete ceiling, then build your house on top.

If I ever rebuild, I am going to try to find a gentle hillside, dig into it for a semi-underground home facing east if I build in Alabama.
Reasons are:
1) south and west are hottest so facing east with the open end would make it cooler.
2) north and northwest have colder winds in winter.
3) all recorded tornadoes in Alabama travel from southwest to northeast.
4) building on a hillside would allow for better drainage around the burried ends.

I know someone who did this in Auburn and didn't use any heat or air condition for one year to see what would happen.  He said when it got down to 14 degrees, the inside was about 55 degrees, so a little fire in the fireplace took care of the chill.  Only used the fireplace 2 days that winter.  In the summer when it got up to 102 degrees, his inside was 85, but muggy.  He discovered he needed air conditioning more than heat.  Said in the winter, body heat, lights, cooking, and showers contributed to heating the home.  So he ended up installing an air-conditioning system, but even that didn't cost him much in the summer.  His home had about 2600 sq. ft.  It faced northeast.  He owns a crane company, so he installed prefab concrete bridge sections over his home after installing 12" block walls 14' high.  He had a suspended ceiling.  This allowed him to install wiring, lighting, and ductwork for his air-conditioning/ dehumidifier system.  When you cut out all your heating costs, and 90% of your air-conditioning costs, that is a big savings.  The cost of the home sq ft wise was about the same as a conventional home.  Last I heard, he was installing a solar water heater/heating system.  With some solar panels, he could probably take care of his lighting with LED lights.    He only put 2' of soil on top of his home.  I told him that one more foot would make him have a constant 60 degrees.  My gas formulas for Alabama are figured for mains 3' deep and constant 60 degrees year round at that depth.  2' made him a little hotter in summer and a little colder in winter.  The extra foot might have changed his inside temperature by 5 degrees each extreme.

This story came in an e-mail. Turns out its our neighbors around the corner.

Quote
One of our MD's today was telling us about his son's experience who is attending the University of Alabama and living off campus.  Rory, the student, was throwing the football outside his rented house after the sirens had gone off...the sky was blue and everything looked ok.  Then they saw a dark cloud approaching.  He and his roommate went into the house and turned on the TV.  Seeing the tornado approaching them all 4 boys in the house were looking out the window and saw a neighbor's roof be blown off.  He was talking to his dad at that moment.  His day told him to run to the basement.  They all ran to what was an old root cellar sort of crawl space and threw an old couch over the top of them.  The entire house from the subfloor up was destoyed.  Rory got word to his father that he was ok at 11pm that night.  The next day after walking over a mile from where our physician had to park the car,  his father was able to get to him .  He saw his son approaching him....dressed in boxer shorts and wearing boots.  Rory was only allowed to take out what he could carry....so he had his 2 rifles in one arm and a mounted deer head in the other.  Only in the South would you see this picture.  His dad said he could not decide whether to laugh or cry.  They returned to the destroyed house to get Rory's computer and a couple of other things.  Rory like so many others has no place to live while in school.  Luckily he was not planning on attending summer school.
