Anyone have a source for M14
« on: April 28, 2011, 03:36:26 PM »
Where are some places to look for (if any) for M14 surplus rifle as I do not like the new Socom style rifle or this a pipe dream?

What you should be looking for is the Springfield Armory M1A.  This is the civilian clone of the old M-14 rifle.  I don't believe that you can purchase an actual surplus M-14 without a Class 3 (full automatic) license.  Even the semi automatic M-14's which the military issued, could be easily converted to full automatic with the use of a special tool or selector switch.  The semi automatic rifles originally built by Springfield Armory (the company), were manufactured using surplus military M-14 parts, but with a newly designed receiver, which did not allow the rifle to be easily converted to fire full auto.  The link below will take you to what I think you are looking for, it's not the Springfield Armory website though.

BTW, the Socom style rifle isn't a new idea, I carried one in VN, back in 1970, the rifle was built by our company armorer, and I inherited it when the original owner deros'd.  Wish I still had that rifle.

zeke,

If you want to spend the money, go to gunbroker, there are quite a few M1a's listed.  This looks like a good one, but it has a synthetic stock, instead of the original wood stock, and stainless barrel instead of the original blue.
I always thought the M-14 was a great rifle and caliber.
Good luck on your search.

There will never be any surplus M-14's on the market. BO and his people even signed legislation that will not let us get OUR  M1 Garands and M1 Carbines back from Korea.

CMP has sold M14 parts kits in the past. You pretty well get what's needed to build or have a civilian M1a built. Just buy a receiver and your set. You may want to take a look at the Garands they have as well. They may be to your liking if you don't care for the tacticool new fangled way things are going. I honestly don't know the last time they offered the parts kits. But they tend to have nothing for several months, then a surplus of everything for a while.

I've noticed a big increase in the M1a springfield armory at my local dealers.  I didn't see any $1,200 M1a's at all.

I think Fulton armory went out of business.

If i was looking to purchase a M14/M1a i'd look for an orginal Polytech M14.  I read even in there orginal condition they were ok. I don't know much about the m14/m1a's but i read were they can have headspace problems.  I'm not sure how many rounds the barrel and headspace is good for.

I was on my way to purchase a $1,200 M1a springer when i walked past a rock of new saiga's in 308win marked $289 thats $307 OTD after taxes.  Since i'm not shooting in any matches or competitions i figured the sagia would fill my needs in 308win.  The saiga in 308win with its 1 1/2'' groups at 100yds using southy african 308 ball ammo, shoots better than i have ever thought.  Some guys are shooting 1/2'' moa's with better quality ammo.  There on the saiga 12 site. Heck i was happy with 1 1/2'' groups with surplus ammo.      I know its no m14/m1a, but she shoots good for $289. We can laugh at its ak/akm looks but the targets don't lie when we shoot it.                                                                                                                                   Bill

You are about 3 hours or so away. But if you make it west a little ways, Larry's pistol and pawn has  good prices on m1a. They are in Huntsville AL. They do sell long guns to TN residents, but not pistols. They do ffl to ffl as well. http://www.pistolandpawn.com/store/index.php?main_page=advanced_search_result&inc_subcat=1&search_in_description=1&categories_id=&keyword=m1a&x=0&y=0

Another good source is Bud's. Your state touches their state so if not to far away you could buy in person or do ffl to ffl. They are in Lexington, KY. http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/index.php/cPath/36_41

This is off topic, but, could anyone here recommend a good but not too expensive mount for a M14? I want to put either a Red Dot or a low power scope on one.    Thanks,
