knee/hip surgery ??
« on: April 29, 2011, 05:21:41 AM »
After a couple years of the pain just getting worse, am thinking of making an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon. Left hip, and right knee, the pain just isn't going away. Not sure, but am thinking replacement might be in order. I guess they might have a way now, of inserting some sort of lining or padding, to take the place of the original cushion. Just wondering if anybody here has had either of these surgery's done in the last couple years, and how it turned out. Couple of friends I know, had it done, and both had good turn outs.
Biggest problem I have, is I quit smoking 15 years ago, and packed on an extra 45lbs. I know that didn't help. Any comments welcome. Thanks, gypsyman

I've never had a replacement surgery, but summer before last I dropped 50 lbs and my joints quit hurting.
Hope whatever you do it works out for you though.

I had 2 right hip replacements about 12 years ago. The first one was glued in place. The glue didn't hold it. Went to a different surgeon and he replaced the ball and socket and what ever else needed replaced. He called it a total hip replacement.  This one is pinned in and i have had no problems with it. Only problem is it sure sets off a metal  detector.

Hip replacement surgery is pretty advanced nowadays.  My sister in law, just had her hip replaced a couple of months ago.  The doctor cautioned her to make sure she did her therapy exercises.  The therapy starts almost immediately after the operation.  She's back to normal.  You're going to need a helping hand the first couple of days maintaining your balance while walking, and it's going to be painful, but you should be good to go in a couple of months.
A bonus is that you are forced to exercise (therapy), and it helps knock off some weight.
Sorry, I can't give you an insight into the knee surgery.  Good luck with whatever you choose to do.

My quandary, I personally, don't think I have enough Handi's but, I know I have more Handi's than I really need or should have.

Every pound you add triples the pressure on knees!
Do not make a determination on any joint surgery, without an MRI, and discussion with an orthepedic surgeon, focusing on options!
Losing weight lowers blood pressure, and may help you avoid replacement. Don't listen to those singing the praises of joint replacement! There are many success stories, after a long frequently painful, recovery from serious surgery!
Go to the Dr!

After gimping around on  bum knee for several years, I had a total knee replacement 4 years ago.
The replacement is not what my knee was 40 years ago, but a hellva lot better than my knee was 10 years ago. Wouldn't hesitate to have it done again.

When I had mine done I was talking to the surgeon, he said that after a couple years a hip replacement patient has to stop to remember which hip was replaced, a knee replacement patient always knows. Good luck with your decision--woodsrunner
