Barrel choke question??

Can a Remington 12 ga. barrel that has a fixed choke in the barrel be changed to the Remchoke System?  Also, lets say the barrel has a fixed imp. cyl or fixed modified choke.  Can that choke be bored (I guess you'd call it) to a less restrictive choke or to a regular cylinder bore diameter resulting in no choke in the barrel at all?  Will doing this cause any ill effects on the barrel.  I'm just thinking or should I say typing out loud.

yes, and yes. 

A gunsmith can open a choke up from say, full to improved cyl.  Depending on the gun you can also open it all the way and have the barrel threaded to take tubes.  Older guns, particularly 2 3/4" guns have thinner barrels where this cannot be done.

Sometimes you can find someone to trade stright across a tubed barrel for a fixed as they are getting harder to find

Buying another barrel w/chokes will probably be cheaper than having yours threaded. I've seen a few barrels laying on the shlves of some of our local gunstores. Gun shows are another good place to locate a barrel. New and used barrels are usually readily available.

+1 on that i thought about having a 20" H&R 20ga barrel threaded for chokes and it would have cost more than a new H&R 20ga

Most remington 12 ga 870 and 1100 bbls can be threaded . If you just get a smith to thread it to rem chokes it will cost from 50-80 dollars no chokes . You can order chokes for under 20 bucks each for standard ones. If you have the bbl shortened or forcing cone extended it will cost more . The idea of having a new bbl is ok but if you have an old wingmaster with thinner bbls a new bbl will be thicker and change the guns handling. At least this is what I have found over the years getting several rem bbls threaded.
