The Belgian Blue is what I used on the other octagon barrel, all it requires in boiling water, I made a tank from a section of galvanized gutter with end caps soldered on, cost less that $8,  I used a micro torch to solder the ends on using plain old acid core solder.

After you said that I was thinking of doing the same thing for the odd bluing jobs that keep popping up.  But only if the resulting finish has a good, maybe even almost professional appearance.  What is your opinion of the quality of the blue job when you were finished?   :-\  It looks good in the pics, but I would like your learned opinion.   ;)

I gather since you are going to a hot nitrate bath blue the Belgian blue didn't live up to your expectations.   :-\

Richard, the Belgian finish is excellent, I just want to try the nitre finish because it has a much greater range of colors, I'm hoping for the 550º Dark purple, 560º Full blue or 570º Dark blue, even if I never do another barrel, I expect to do some frames if it comes out good, and I have a bunch of steel spacers and trigger guards to do as well.  ;D

Thanks DP.  ;)

AH SO! ;D  Thanks Tim!  I enjoy trying stuff, but I could just never bring myself to give nitrate bluing a shot.   :-\  Hi-ebber, and day always be a hi-ebber!  ;D  I will build a tank and try the Belgian blue!

You'll be very satisfied with it Richard, it may take a few applications and carding cycles, it just keeps getting darker each time, but it's a very rewarding finish and worth the time.  ;)

Just a thought.   :-\  I wonder what I'd end up with if I did the same process but used Plum Brown?  Guess there's omly one way to find out!   ;D

I've only used LMF for Browning, I considered it for the first barrel, but decided on a nice blue finish instead, the Belgian is more of a black finish.

The BC Plum Brown will do black with boiling, or has for me with small parts. Also, for carding, I found one of those old, very fine, soft brass bristle brushes in an 'antique store, what a beauty for our purposes. It will card without digging in so hard that it takes off the color.

I tried the nitre bleing twice, both were failures, first one was straw colored with bright blue spots causes by air bubbles that I didn't remove, after sanding it all down and starting over, it came out straw colored again, some blue splotches, looked terrible.  :'( I bought a new burner for my grille, but it still isn't long enough to heat the 24½" tank, burner 21½" long, the blueing in the ends just didn't get hot enough, when I reduced the heat to keep the middle at about 600º, the blueing in the ends of the tank cooled off and solidified. I added a propane torch under each end to keep the ends hots, but it was a real circus trying to maintain even heat throughout the tank, which resulted it a terrible finish.  ::) Soooo, to do a barrel, I'll need to make a custom burner that's longer, I also need to get some more KNO3, 10lbs is not quite enough, just too shallow, I added a couple trailer axle stubs to the tank to raise the level a bit which was enough to immerse the barrel if I held the underlug so it was sideways which didn't work out well, the wire hanger just didn't cooperate all the time.

So for now, I'll just do frames, trigger guards, spacers and other smaller parts.  FWIW, the two axle stubs came out a deep blue, but not any better than the Belgian blue that I got on the barrel after I sanded it all down for a forth time with 600 grit, and finished it today, except for the round to octagon area which was hard to card and has a slightly redish hue, the barrel came out a beautiful deep, satin black, it took 14-16 cycles of carding and blueing (I lost count!  ??? ) to get there, but it's worth it.

My FFL holder requires any firearms to be shipped to them via another FFL holder.  So, If I make an offer on a firearm please let me know if this is capable of being done from the start.  Please do NOT mark an item "SPF" to me until we "both" are happy with and in agreement on shipping, funds and the transaction in general.   Thanks

I would have to see a good job of the nitre bluing to say that the Belgian Blue is a compromise. I have to agree with Spartacus, it's "Damn Sexy!!"  ;D

Tim,

Nice work, and a lot of it too boot!

Thinkin' out loud here from my days in engineering school but can you insultant your tank and/or use a mixer to attempt to keep the temperature constant?  Just about every time of reactor (engineer word for tank that you mix chemicals in) is stirred and insulated.

I tried that, still not easy with multiple heat sources, if you look at the heat color chart I posted, you'll see there isn't much difference between drastically different colors, just under 600º is fine, but over and it goes light blue. And then there's the problem of the item used to stir with, until it's as hot as the solution, the KNO3 solidifies on it, I was using a long screw driver, had a baseball sized chunk of KNO3 on the end after a while, that doesn't stir well.  ::) When I placed the barrel in the tank, it immediately became encased in a thick layer of solid KNO3, that took about a ½hr to reheat.

Thanks everyone, gonna mill a Numrich rail for it today, then mount a Weaver k2½ in low Burris rings.

Tim,
I just spotted a fatal flaw in your rifle. ::) Rather than pointing it out in the open forum, please mail it to my FFL dealer right away. :D We may need to do some extensive testing and evaluations lasting 2 or more years before it can be returned. ;D

Just kidding, you are the envy of Handiaholics world-wide.

Great Job!!

Thanks, Dinny

Fred,
That's why I don't see you much then!!!  I am generally on thru the winter months and switch to trail riding with the Jeep and ATV come late spring and summer. Returning when the chill is in the air and hunting season approaches...

Regardless of how it happens, its good to hear from you Fred!!

Sorry for the hijack Tim!!!

Hey Tim.  I've been sitting here looking at the pic of your rifle.  What a beautifully proportioned and well balanced thing it is!   :)

I spent some time today looking for plans for a burner to go under the bluing tank.  Then I saw a picture of a fellow's setup.  He uses 3 burner cast iron propane camp stoves and just sits his tanks on them!  What an idea!   :o  So, next time I put in a Sportsman's Guide order Ima gonna get me one a them!  I always wanted one for my camping kit anyway.   ;)

I'm thinking I can polish and blue the barrel on my 450 Sharps Express when I get it back from the 'smith!   ;D  If I ever get it to the 'smith...  :-\

Beautiful work Tim. I wish I could talk you into doing the same to my Hornet. As far as your burner goes, have you tried making it out of 1/4 inch screw pipe? I made a forge a few years ago this way, and it worked pretty well. Wasnt very hard either. You can make as many burners in as many places as you need.
