Want a .38 Super
« on: April 30, 2011, 06:44:42 PM »
I do a lot of hunting with my .44 mag. but I am wanting a 1911 or a 1911-A1 in .38 Super for a carry gun and for shooting feral hogs.  What would you suggest I get?  I am looking for a standard blue with fixed sights  I don't want a commander.  Just a standard size military .38 Super.

You may also want to investigate the 9x23. Look at the STI web or contact Dillion Percision.

Thanks for the information.  STI pistols look impressive, but I am looking for a "plain Jane" model.  I like the .38 Super round.  I imagine 10 shooters could give me 10 reasons why, what they shoot is best.  I did fail to mention that I have a 1911 .45 made by Union Switch & Signal Co. that I bought through the DCM in 1966.  According to its excellent condition, it saw very little use as a service arm and I have always been prone to revolvers, so I used it very little over the years.  I am hitting 68 y.o. this year and my wife told me if I found that d**n .38 Super I've been wanting for 2 years , she would buy it for my b-day.   :)

I am not sure but I think you can get the Super in their base Trojan pistol.

Try Taurus, Caspian Arms, Colt should still make one in the Government Model, maybe Rock Island Armory.

RockIland Armory still offers a 1911 in 38super in blue or nickel finish

Colt offers a "38 super" in hard chrome

Citadel offers a 38 super in nickel also.

YES!
Get one. It is an impressive cartridge and ammunition is getting a bit easier to find. I have a Taurus and am impressed with the amount of good stuff that is standard with the gun. Sweet trigger, Novak sights, ambi-safety, beaver-tail grip safety, forward slide serrations, etc.
CDNN has the Taurus for $399. They also have the Rock Island Armory (Phillipines) basic 1911-A1's in .38 Super for much less. The RIA's are a lot of gun for the money.
I also picked up a half dozen MecGar magazines and they work perfectly.
Centerfire systems has 130-grain 1250fps +P loads for $14 a box, and Natchez Shooters Supply has Aguilla +P for about $16 a box. More common are the Cor-bon offerings, which are rather pricy for plinking, but with a wide range of bullet types.
If you handload, the Super can use a wide range of bullet weights. The only drawback is that the Super will throw empty brass clear back to the parking lot, so a recoil spring adjustment may be in the works.

Good luck

I have been looking on Gun Brokers and haven't seen that many .38 Supers.  Everyone on here seems to know of several.  I'm reading up on the STI Williamlayton suggested and I think Kimber makes one a blued one. Thanks for all the information.  I am still looking.

buy the colt!  its shiney but most of the time it will sit in a holster anyway.  They made them first so you can have some nostalgia and a basic pistol.

Dixiejack, go to the Cabela's websight and click on the gun library. Go to the Richfield Wisc store. On the second page is a Colt Custom shop 1911 in .38super in bright stainless. It is way cool. God Bless and keep ypur powder dry. 8)

I saw some Colt "100 years of service"  1911 .38 Supers on Gun broker.  Prices averaged around $900.00. Has a 70 series trigger mechanism.  3 dot sights.  Does anybody have one they want to share about?  Should I shell out a little more money and get a Kimber or STI?  I want a blued full size model.

Dixie
You have to take my thoughts on this with a grain of salt
STI and Sigs are just about the only weapons I own that have never had a Smith touch them. The STI statement is not actually the truth.
I bought both of mine through Dillon Percision and he reccommended a change in the ejector---so the STI's have a Wilson ejector.
I have several Colts---They have all been reworked to my specs--wheather or not that was needed is open to conjecter.
I like well made parts and good fits---just my little world I live in.
Colts in .38 super, without the glare, are findable. I am fond of the Commanders---but I do have some 5 inchers.
One of these days the STI's will get short GI triggers, which I prefer.

I bought a Taurus 38 Super and must say that it shot to point of aim and had no malfunctions.  I found that my Taurus did not have a fully supported chamber, which can be dangerous with hot loads.  I traded it for a EAA, but found the EAA needs the rounds loaded shorter than max length or they stick in the mag >:(.  Bought a RIA everything is good, gun shoots to point of aim, supported chamber and takes full length loads 8).  Still have the EAA but it sits in the safe, love my RIA.  rawhidekid

Well, I got the RIA 1911 .38 Super.  Shot a box of shells and it worked perfect.  Seems plenty accurate.  Doesn't seem to recoil as hard as the .45.  Don't feel right about buying an import.

Apparently one does not just "go out and buy" a 1911  in .38 super.  Not alot of choices.   Wanted a high polish nickel one but my dealer couldn't get me one.  Maybe Ruger will make a .38 Super some day; then I'll get an American one.   My guess is that I'm probably lucky to get any 1911 in .38 Super.  Nice, but not a hot item based on ammo choices or magazine chioces.

I don't subscribe to the idea that anything "Colt" is worth $1000.-$1500.  The last couple Colt items I owned were okay, but no nicer than anything else American for 1/3 less.

Go to Cabela's Gun Library.  They have several nice chrome .38 Supers.  It is a lot easier to find a chrome or stainless than a blued and that's what I'm looking for. I found a STI Trojan in .38 Super that's blued, but I am having a problem finding a source to buy from.

I looked at every Dillon Precision website and didn't see any STI's or any weapons for sell.  Maybe we are on different pages (web).   :)

Where is the STI made?

I didn't see any .38 Supers on the Dawson site, but I'll keep looking.   I'm thinking the .38 Super must be a "dog".   I like mine, though.   I see the .38 Super has slightly more case capacity than the .357 Sig.

The 38 Super is similer to a "dog" in that it gets it's loyal owners.  It is  a great round for reloading with capability from 115grn thru 160 grn.  My RIA and my EAA both feed semi wad cutters in 157 grn wheel weight without a hitch.  The only draw back is comercial loadings and they are available on the internet if not locally. 8)

You just have to tell Dawson what you want---he will get it.
You can also find a dealer located closer to you by checking out their dealer locations at their web site.
Good weapon and the 9x23 is also.
Re-loading is the best way to max out any caliber.

Here are pictures of some of my guns.
Couple not included. The new LW commander--being blued.
The bottom is a LW Commander in .38 super.
Top is a 9x23 STI hard chromned by Fords.
Middle is an engraved series 70 with OLD Ivory handles---looked at this for almost a year before I gave in and bought it.

William, You have some fine 1911's.

My "dog" (LOL) is a Colt MK/4 70 series Government model and it comes with a .22RF accessory slide, bbl., and mag.  I also got an extra mag for the .38 Super.  Supposed to be in Monday.  I will try and get some pictures up next week.

The dealer who is receiving it  stocks several brands of .38 Super ammo because he has a race gun in that caliber.  I am going to get him to check it out for me.  You never know exactly what your getting when you buy a gun from photos, but the dealer I bought it from is reputable.  We will see.

William, great guns, is the second one down your BBQ gun?  I thought the grips were going to be different. 8)

Good eye.
No that is a full sized Gov. model.
The BBQ gun---which seems to have turned into a Brisket--is not shown.
I have given up on engravers--it is up at James willis's place to have a good blueing done---it may now be called a court gun. :(
But that one is a pretty nice BBQ gun--I just didn't have any say in the engraving. Those Ivories are real nice though.
I need to get rid of the trigger though---it was my bad attempt at something---need to put a short GI in, it is a much more serious trigger.

I just picked up a bunch of Winchester 38 Super ammo for my Taurus.  Had been $27.99 for a box of 50, marked down to $19.99 but at the register it was $14.99.  Time I bought brass, bullets, primer and powder, I would have that much in it.  Went back and cleaned off the shelf ;D.  Have to run some through this next weekend, so far has only had American Eagle and Remington.  DP
