Remignton 870 Shell Latch
« on: May 01, 2011, 04:53:45 PM »
One of the shell latches came out of the reciever on my 870 tonight.  I got the gun back together by holding it in place with a screwdriver and putting the trigger mechanism in.

These appear to be peened into place.  It there some secret to re-peen them into place or better to just live with it loose.

The peening you see is meant to retain the latch until the fire control mechanism can be installed to actually retain it. I have made an offset punch to restake (note the receiver must be supported when doing this).  Don't usually bother too much. The front fire control retaining pin holds the stop in correct alignment for proper function.

Thanks gunnut69.

I think I will just leave it alone for the time being.  The side it is on you can still get the fire control mechanism in while holding the shell latch.  That sounds like a better option than trying to re-stake it without the proper tool.
