Illegal in the USA.  Destructive devise.  No pistols over .499 caliber.
Sorry, even as a short barreled rifle or shotgun needs to be 27" over all as a min.
May be able to fin a 410 pistol barrel that short but it is a claiber, not a GA and under .499 caliber.

Taurus is coming out with a 28 ga. revolver. As mcwoodduck said 12 ga is illegal unless you buy a $200 NFA stamp. http://mrcompletely.blogspot.com/2005/11/serbu-super-shorty-12-gauge.html

Look under the any other weapon (AOW) category in NFA rules. That is where shotgun pistols fit. You can even make your own 12ga pistol with BATF approval and the proper registration. Just be legal.

Never heard the .499 deal on pistols. 50 ae, 500 linbaugh, 500 wyoming express, 500 S&W magnum and even 50 bmg in a single shot differ from the .499. I think you may have read some bad info somewhere. No big deal, we all do from time to time. Have a good day.

The 50 AE and the 500  linebough or 500 s&w are .490
50 BMG is .510 and a destructive weapon, a few have built them, and depending on classification they are legal, as manufactureres but you can not buy one off the shelf like you can a rifle.  Also a lot of the 600 NE, and 50 BMG guns you see are done in New Zealand where it is legal.
Black powder guns are exempt and that is why we have the Cabellas 58 X50 or 20ga X 20ga Howda pistol.  You can get a variance from ATF for a historical gun like the 577 revolver or a Howda SXS, but again you need a vairiance from ATF to build them and they can not be sold.
While Taurus may be building one in Brazil they may not be able to bring it here.

Trust me I can see the advantages of having a GA pistol for hunting.
Easy way to fill the pot with small game and winged critters while headed back from big game hunting.
This is the reason I bought a 410 barrel for my Contender.

Hornady puts the 50 cal pistol bullets at .500" as well. Looks like they measure pistol bores different than rifle bores to utilize .5" bullets.

.50 only applies to rifled bbls that are for smokeless powder. 10 ga.  seems the limit to hunting smooth bores . 8 ga is used to knock crud off paper plant tooling . Ithica made a nice dbl bbl that was pistol grip and about 14-16 inches in bbl length . A coach gun may have been the name. it was marketed as a gun to keep in ones car. There are several short pumps around as are some single shot guns. Depending on if you make the gun or buy one produced in a factory the tax stamp may not be $200.00 .

Yea in VA when I lived there the 12 to 14 inch entry 870 guns were the rage.
It was a $50 tax stamp for a short barreled rifle or shotgun.  But that is a rifle or shotgun, not a pistol.
Samantics I know but still a difference.  For some reason you can cut a rifle down to a pistol length barrel and that is $50 if you want to stick a stock on a new handgun it is a $500 tax stamp.
The only thing i can say is its the goverment and will never make sense.

Really - you can kill your wife serve some time and in some cases have your rights restored even gun rights. Slap her and never be able to own a gun .

second the tax stamp is one thing , the big thing is you open your self to inspection from local LEO's and Frderal LEO's when you own restricted weapons . They can with out warrant come to the location you listed as where it will be secured and check on it any time .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Since most hunting regs say 18 inch bbl. that takes out hunting. Range work and defense would be uses. In todays world would a single shot be the best choice ? even short pumps hold fewer rounds in some cases as few as 2-3 .

T/C used to sell a 20" turkey barrel. Depending which grip and choke you use, it is long enough to be legal. 2 oz turkey loads were tooo much but is fine with standard loads.

i'm just starting the paper work for a 12 ga encore pistol. yes it is a lot of paper work atf forums in duplicate  , letter from your local sheriff proving you are a us citizen, two sets of finger prints, photo,  registration with the bca in your state and then wait to see if you are approved.  i love hunting with my .410-45 contender but it is to light for turkey and shots on pheasants need to be kept to 30' or so. the reason for going to 12 ga. is simply barrel volume and the availability of so many different loads.yes it will cost me $200.00 for the tax stamp and as a rule i hate to send the government money but some times you got to pay to play.  don't be afraid to call the atf or your state bca every one that i talked with were polite and very helpful.

While illegel in cartridge guns they are legal in black powder.

Below are a 12 gauge canoe or blanket gun and a 20 gauge Howdah.
