Does the Russian M-44 shoot the 7.62x54r or 7.62x54? I just got one from Aim and the 54r does not want to go behind the extractor

Are you trying it by hand with the bolt out or feeding a round from the magazine?
M-44 is normally a 7.62x54r but the chinese did modify some to shoot 8mm Mauser.

I believe you'll find they are the same cartridge. Many leave off the "R" (rimmed) at the end. Correct designation is 7.62x54R

Mine had petrified cosmoline in various places and wouldn't feed from the magazine or get a firing pin strike until it was thoroughly de-petrified

It actually is only a 53 mm case?
not sure where the 54 came from!
