Wear T-shirts with the french or swiss  flag on them   ;)   ;D. Stay in the usual tourist areas, you should be fine. My wife and i keep thinking of going to europe together (we've both been, her for a vacation and I was stationed in Vicenza,Italy for 27 months). But the exchange rate is turning us off, we have too much going on anyway.

Where are you going?? Have fun, get the passport wallets that go around your neck and keep them on your person. Have the addresses of all the American consulates in all the countries you are planning to visit. make most if not all your purchases with a credit card, so you have recourse if the #'s are misused. Like they told me when I arrived in Europe, Blend In.  Also do not go into Muslim areas of any of the cities you go to.  In other words if you see women wearing burkas turn around and go the other way.  Most major European cities have a Muslim portion of the city where all others are not welcome.  But like I said, be aware of your surroundings and don't go where it looks suspicious.  And Blend in, don't look American.  Leave the Cowboy boots and buckles at home.

Mr. Layton,
I think it is to soon to tell what effects Bin Ladens death will cause. However when ever traveling abroad it is best to appear as from the area. Alot of good advice on blending in.
Try to get a hotel room on the 3rd - 4th floor not close to the back exits or street side. Somewhere in the middle is best. If renting a car try to find one that resembles what the common person drives. If you think you are in trouble, being followed etc. head straight to the local police station. Try to be anonymous in a crowd. Most importantly have fun and enjoy yourselves.

The Europeans didn't kill Bin Laden - we did.  IMHO, the potential for repercussions is far greater here than there.  If you're that worried Europe might would actually be a good place to "lay low" for a while ;).

Also, I don't buy into their non-sense about it being due to gun laws - rather, just a matter of culture - but the crime rate in most European countries is lower, on average, than over here.  It's on the rise (and particularly in England that rise coincided with the outlawing of guns, kind of breaking that connection), but the numbers don't lie - you're more likely to be attacked on the streets of Atlanta than Bruges.  Have fun :).

Bad things can happen walking down the street or sitting on the pot.

There's no good reason to travel life's path fearing what 'might' happen, but there's also no good reason to be a dumb@ss.  Be prudent.

If you can't walk a street and be proud to be an American, maybe there's a better place to spend your money.

In a lot of respects, I also am not too worried. Stuff happens.
We fly to Budapest and get on a river boat for 15 days to Amsterdam. No driving and no hotels until we get to Amsterdam.
Budapest is the only place that really worries me and we will be free there for a day--the boat departs at evening.
The rest of the trip we are out of the mainstream for the most part.
I have a friend doing some checks for me thru his agency.

Sounds like a fun trip.
I do not think Budapest or Amsterdam are high on the radicals hit lists.
Places with large Muslium populations would concern me, but places that serve pork with everything like Hungary,Slovakia, Czech Republic, Germany all seem pretty safe.
Spain, France, and parts of England with large Muslium populations, if 1% are radicals and want to take out revenge, they are going to do it, they will try to hit places like Kadafi did in the 80's that get US military personell off the base, at night clubs.
I do not think postponing a trip because some looser with a grudge may attack is a reason to cancel a trip.
Their goal is to disrupt our life style, get us not to spend $ and grow our economy or the global economy making more ticked off people that blame us for their failures and join their side.  If you do not go on the trip you are letting them win at terrorizing you.
Live your life, don't take unnessary risks but go live your life.
I vote go.  Take lots of pictures and bring you kids and grandkids brick a brack from the different places.  I still have a painted horse some where in the house my Grandpartents brought me back from one of their trips in the late 70's or early 80's from Norway.  I can still see them talking about the many trips they went on so many years ago and reminds me of them, and planing and taking trips at 90 years old, both passing the following year or two.

Amsterdam will be a two day wind down before we fly home.
I am really interested to see if I can find any gunshops--I would like to browse one even thought I don't think I could get it home. The Germans have some good craftsmen.
We will probably get a few handmade Christmas ornaments for gifts and rememberances.
I am looking forward to seeing shops that are not tourist traps.
I don't own a belt that is not western, anymore.

Too bad its the tail end wind down. Utrecht and Harlem are great spots to visit. Anyway, walking around Amsterdam is interesting. There are plenty of pubs and resturants. Do a canal tour. Its interesting. Walk the red light. My wife and I were there last summer. Best part of the trip was Utrecht. I was there for business and decided to add a few days for pleasure and brought the wife along. I have been there a number of times over the years.

Cabin
I know you have and I am interested to see some of Amsterdam.
Mainly I wanted a couple of days just to stretch and relax and Amstedam was offered.
I do want to do a canal tour. As a matter of fact, I was also interested in doing a canal tour of Europe--maybe some other time.
I will do the smoke shops and Red light walk as part of the experience.
I have been looking at the river tours for a while now--they seem to be more intimate without climbing on and off busses. Some of the towns (cities) are alittle off the tourist routes. 200 people on a river boat---gloriifed flat bottom river craft---seems a relaxing trip.
We will see.
I will drink some German beer and eat some sausage for each.
