New to Contenders ?????????????
« on: May 02, 2011, 05:14:51 PM »
I have 3 Pro Hunter frames and 6 barrels some 28" some 26" but after reading on Encore forum many people feel Contenders were the way to go for starting kids on. Well a buy come up on local classifieds for a contender in a 223 carbine barrel topped with Leupold VXII 3X9X40 ans a S series Burris Bipod $400.00 needless to say my 12 year old granddaughter has her first rifle. If all goes good I'll pick up a 243 barrel for deer. It is shorter and a little lighter which will make it easier to handle. Like I need another excuse to buy more barrels!

Question is I had a friend years ago with a Contender in pistol form the frame had a cougar head on one side and cougar on ledge on other. This has Cougar on ledge on both sides did they change some where down the road. I've been reading this forum and understand G2 vs older just don't understand easy open vs older. How do I tell which I have and how old this contender is? Serial # 426*** also is the switch on hammer center fire vs rim fire vs safety a problem for younger kids? Or is the best thing for me to switch and leave till she becomes more comfortable?

Thanks Hog

Someone will be along pretty soon with age and other info on your daughters new toy. You mention the comfort factor. The most comfortable, and fun, caliber in a Contender is 22LR. I would start her there so she has some trigger time at little expense to get real familiar with the rifle. As you know by now, you don't need any excuses in the world of T/Cs, new barrels are NEEDED! Have fun with the new rifle and young shooter!

I'll try to keep this simple to understand, but if I fail and you don't understand something please let us know.

Your Contender frame was made in the spring of 1994, and it is an easy open.

Easiest way to remember which is which is the easy open frames started in 1981 with about serial number 195,000, so all lower numbered blued Contender frames are not EO and all after are.   Where the pivot pin is located for the trigger guard is also an identifier - forward of the trigger is not and over the trigger is EO.    TC also offered a conversion to make early vintage frames into EO's that you could see both pin locations on.

Most users (including for kids) simply put the rimfire/centerfire selector on the hammer to what matches the barrel mounted on the frame and just leave it as is and do not use the center position as a safety.   When the frame is opened to load and closed an acceptable "safety"  is in effect by the position of the hammer until the hammer is cocked.    Kids taught good firearms safety should have no problems with that.

From 1967 until a little after the plant fire in 1997 the Contenders had a high relief full bodied cougar on rock investment cast right into both sides of the frame.   After the fire they had an etched cougar head only on both sides.    For a short time they also offered what was called flat side frames with plain side panels that could be left plain or with certain decorations right from TC, as well as done by a third party.

The one you describe your pard has I have to assume is etched both sides and is probably a "lunch time" frame done by a TC smith with both the old and new side patterns, or a flat side frame etched by same or a third party.   If the full body is investment cast and the other side is etched it could be a pre fire frame with the raised full body ground off one side and then etched.   The frames serial number would probably tell which is most likely (because of when it was made).

Hope that was clearer than mud and helps.   If not, let us know.

One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

You will not get a 243 Win barrel for a Contender. It is too much for the action. The 243 is for the Encore. I would get a 30-30 Win barrel and if you don't reload get some Federal 125 gr Power-Shok JHP ammo and if that is too much for her get some Rem. 125 gr Managed-recoil ammo. If you hand load you have it made. Use Nosler 125 ballistic tips and tailor the loads to suit you.

Here's a caliber list of what's available. http://www.bullberry.com/TCbarrels.html I would recommend the 6.8 spc. Not very much more recoil than a 223. Yet more than enough power for deer. And the trajectory isn't so bad either. The bonus is bulk rounds so the price to shoot will be lower than the lever action calibers. Would also second the 22lr barrel. Nothing can compare to the practice that barrel would give her.

Suggest the information provided by Ladobe be converted to a stickey.  The best information I've seen re: contenders in a few short paragraphs.
