What next?
« on: May 03, 2011, 04:10:08 AM »
I got my first Contender (New Model, .44 Mag.) a bit less than 2 years ago.  I now have 3 frames and 14 barrels.   I sorta but oppertunistically figuring that if something is a god buy, I will use it eventually.  I've gotten to the point where I'd rather doubt my sanity for buying something rather than beat myself for passing up a "buy".  Know what I mean?  I was also warned that there is a certain sickness that attacks Contender owners.

Anyway, here is a list of the barrels that I own.  I am wondering if there are notable things missing.  Like a .222 maybe?  I am also thinking that I like the longer barrels better.  Any thoughts on that ?

12"   .17 Ackley Bee
14"   .17 HMR
10"   .22 LR
10"   .22 WMR
10"   .223
10"   .30 Carbine
12"   .357 Magnum
10"   .357 Maximum/magnum
10"   .44 Remington
10"   .445 Super Magnum
10"   .45 Long Colt/.410 (snakes)
10"   32/20 Winchester
10"   7-30 Waters
10"   .30-30

Here is one of my frames with the 14" .17HMR barrel.  The wood was dinged so I refinished it and added a swivel for the bipod.  Its pretty good at 50yds.  Haven't gotten it out to 100 yet.

With upwards of 250 cartridges that have been chambered for the Contenders the skies the limit.   Depends a lot on what kinds of shooting/hunting you do or hope to do which cartridges, what barrel lengths and whether you'll shoot them with open sights or scopes.  Much of the fun is the endless possibilities if your bank account holds out.    Contenderitis is a very common affliction for many folks after they buy their first Contender, and some get it real bad.    I was a stricken lost soul that owned nearly 50 frames and around 225 barrels from my first one bought in 1968, and the last 3 decades a lot of them wildcats.

Noticed you don't have any 14, 20, 24, 25, 26, 27, 33, 37, 40 or 41 calibers in either pistol or rifle calibers, so they might be of interest as there is a lot of them to choose from.   All the JDJ's are excellent choices, as are all the Super Bowers if you can still find any.   Re the 222 you mentioned, it does pretty well in a 14" barrel and will out shoot its 223 counterpart.   Re your 17HMR, your only out to about a quarter of the range it will shoot quite well with a good scope.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

Well for MY shooting and collecting I figured I had to have a few of the "classic" Contender barrels like the Herretts and T/CUs.  After that it was just stuff that seemed to intrigue me at the time or a good deal that happened along.  Here are mine, maybe something will call out to you:
22" 17 rem 3-9x40mm
10" 22lr octagon open sights
14" 22lr 2.5-10x50mm
14" 22lr match open sights
16" 22lr open sights
10" 223 bull 2.5-8x32mm EER
14" 6mm T/CU 4x20mm EER
10" 256 win mag octagon 2x20mm EER
10" 7mm T/CU bull 4x32mm EER
14" 7-30 Waters 2.5-8x32 EER
14" 300 Whisper 2x20mm EER
10" 30 Herrett bull 2x20mm EER
10" 357 mag octagon 2.5x20mm EER
10" 357 Herrett bull 2x20mm EER
14" 375 JDJ 2x20mm EER
10" 44 mag octagon open sights (ouch)
10" 44 mag bull 2x20mm EER
10" 45/410 shot vent rib

I'm more partial to the 10" barrels for carryability and the way they balance.  For many calibers that is all you need.  I enjoy the 14" barrels too, but to me they put the Contender handgun more toward the "hand rifle" category as some call it.  I recently added a couple of carbine barrels for grins, but much prefer the Contender as a pistol.  I've seen some shooters who lean toward handgun cartridges and the Contender makes the most of them of course.  Others either have a mix or lean toward the bottle neck rounds.  It's all in what "feels right" to you.  Good luck in your quest!

You really need a 10" 222. Mine is really accurate and fun to shoot.  Very little kick, nice little fireball, even with H4198 and no where as obnoxious as a 10" 223. Ladies at the range ask to shoot it whenever they see me.  Have a 22 Hornet since '83  but 222 is my go to barrel. It does 2700fps with RP 46gr HP  and H4198.
