Anyone have one? How is it? I'm looking at a .50cal in VG condition. I'd like to know if these like patch rb or conicals.

A Good friend of mine has a 50 cal TC WMC. He shoots both rb and hornady great plains bullets with very good accuracy. It's his favorite hunting rifle. I believe it has a 1:48 twist like my renegade rifles.

don't know what the twist is and never was much on roundballs but the one i had shot very well with maxi-balls and 70 to 90 grains pyrodex. for what it's worth, bubba.

Love mine!

Got my first ever deer this past season with her. I used 80grs. of FFG and the Horady 50 Cal 350gr InterLock FPB. Can't comment on any other type of round as this is the only thing I have shot out of her. Might tinker with the 300gr FPB and a tang sight this year.

1:48, 1:20 or 1:21......

The early production White Mountain Carbine's in 50 cal had 1:20 twist, later ones 1:38. The 45's and 54's have 1:48.

My WMC has a 1:20 twist.... It shoots .290 Powerbelts over 70 grs. of 777, extremely well at 50 yards! The fit and finish, plus the barrel quality steel is much better than even the top of the line inlines... I have seen numerous for sale used for about $200...

Nice deer, congradulations. By the way I like the scope on your WMC. I'm getting where I need optics to hit anything. I've even thought about going to shotguns so I have a better chance of hitting something.

Well, Thanks all for your comments. I seemed to have waited too long on the TC WMC and buddy sold it to someone else

I just got a WMC last night. Gave it a relly good cleaning this morning. I've had several T-C Muzzleloaders in the past, this one has a really heavy trigger. Any one ever work on theirs to lighten the pull?

I got mine off of Auction Arms several years ago and love it. Its 50 cal with 1 in 20" twist and shoots Hornady Great Plains 385 gr. lead conicals with 90grns. Pyrodex real accurately. The iron sights are all I use but thinking about switching to Trueglo sights front and rear for better sight visibility at sunset times. My friend has a TC White Mountain Carbine which he has mounted the TrueGlo's and there just the ticket for my old eyes. My brother also has one and had the bbl tapped for a scope but I'm not ready to go to a scope yet. The gun has great balance and is nice and light to carry which I love.

I am sure you know this Swamp, but its the opposite. In a 50 cal 1 turn in 60-70" is round ball twist. One turn in 20" is conical and considered a "fast" twist for a black powder barrel. In the middle is combo. That's a SLOW twist for round balls...

IE a 223 with a 1:7 is fast twist and designed for heavy LONG bullets while a 1:12-14 would be better for lighter bullets.

1 in 28" and /or 1 in 48" twist barrels will shoot round balls just fine. I do it all the time. A .490 over 80 grains of Goex 3f or Pyrodex will make nice 50 yard groups.

Its been said before, its hard to OVER stabilize a projectile... IE a fast twist for a short bullet. The opposite is against the laws of physics.

As stated about 1:48 for a 50 cal WILL work just fine for short or long projectiles. That's why they offer it. But 1:20 is for conicals and poor round ball accuracy will be the norm.

Swampy may get acceptable accuracy from round balls in a 1:20 twist, most will not.

I'll have to go with Swampman on this I've never had a problem shooting round balls from barrels with fast twist rates.
Accuracy with a fast twist rate is better with conical bullets , but I have never noticed any loss of accuracy between a round ball fire from a fast twist as opposed to a slow rate of twist. The two may not like the same load combination ( patch, ball, and powder charge ) , but that is all about load development.
The main advantage to slow twist rates is they are easier to load and clean.

Well, as of today (2nd Jan 2012) thanks to some CHRISTmas money I bought a TC Pennsylvania Hunter Carbine in .50
It has a 1:24" twist and is in very good condition, barely used with just the normal dings. I'll be trying some prb & Lee Improve Minie.

Huntsman, That is some nice wood on your WMC. In my opinion these purty stocks are worth many $$. The steel butplate is interesting, every WMC I have seen is rubber butt. I have read on one of these topics a reference to a 54 WMC. 54?

it may be factory with the steel buttplate or it may be a white mountain carbine barrel in a pennsylvania hunter stock. either way it's a beautiful gun. for what it's worth, bubba.

I always chuckled when I saw that gun advertised. I mean isn't Pennsylvania's black powder season flint lock only?

Meaning You could likely only use it during reg gun season... (It been a while since I hunted PA.)
