Which Bullet 30-30
« on: May 03, 2011, 04:12:08 PM »
Which weight, brand, style bullet should I order from Midway for 30-30 Handi rifle? Sounds like 150 or 170 gr. from what I've been reading. Can't use it for deer here. Hopefully someday Hogs. Want to sight in and get familiar with one to start with.

Also any luck with a accurate light weight bullet in the 30-30.

What powder would you start with, I have a few. Thanks for any help.

Probably want to start off with a low cost bullet for plinking and just getting used to the caliber.

For many, many years my go to bullet for the 30-30 was the Hornady 170G... Then I bought some 160 FTX bullets.. MAN do they shoot!!!!

I have shot dozen or so with the 170 but only one with the 160.

Another good one is the 125 Nosler BT. As its a SS spitzers are a great bullet in the Handi!!

My favorite jacketed bullets are the Speer, either the 150 or the 170, with 748 ,biggame or rl15 powders.
The Hornady and Speer 110's have provided alot of lowrecoil "fast" bullet fun.
In the 1920's "sheeple" was a term coined by the National Socialist Party in Germany to describe people that would not vote for Hitler. In the 1930's they held Hitler as the only one that would bring pride back to Germany and bring the budget and economy back.....

I shoot 150gr Win PP and Sierra 150GR flatpoint with both H4895 and Win 748 with good results from my Win 94, 1-1/2" @ 100 yrds. A friend gets 1" with factory Win. 150gr PP out of his 14" T/C Contender. My low cost plinker is a 165gr cast with a reduced H4895 load.

;) You might check out the bulk bullets from Midway..usually you can get Rem.. or Win.. in 500 or 1000 packs a bit cheaper..that is how I buy many of my pistol bullets...and some .22 cal. bullets..for varmiting, the speer 130 grain flat point was fun to use in my Marlin...

I did some testing this past winter with the new LeverEvolution propellantand 170 grain Sierra FN bullet, results as follows;

Loaded some 170 grain Sierra flatnose bullets with Hodgdon's LeverEvolution propellant today, and shot at my home range. The temp was 31 degrees, distance 100 yards, Rifle was 30-30 Topper 22" with cheap 1.5-4.5x21mm Bushnell scope. This is primarily a back-up rifle with a 5 1/2lb. trigger pull.

Case was Winchester with WLR primers and cartridge overall length I used was 2.600"

The bottom two shots were with 34.0 grains, avg. velocity was.......................... 2062 fps.
The next four shots slightly to left of center were with 35.0 grains, avg. was...... 2117 fps.
The shot to right of center was with 36 grains, velocity.........................................2179 fps
All rounds shot over F1 Chrony.

The loading data was from Hodgdon's website. Maximum load Hodgdon listed is at 36.3 grains and velocity is listed as 2325 fps. I will load with 36.3 grains and try that yet today or tomorrow and am thinking 2200 fps is where I'll end up but then again who knows. Accuracy is the best that I've had with this rifle to date, and I'm extremely pleased. I would normally shoot 130 grain SSSP bullets or Barnes 130 grain XBT's through this rifle.

I think the LE propellant is a winner and though I may not reach book stated velocity, the accuracy was excellent for this old guy.  I paid $24.99 for the LE propellant. In the past, my loading was done with W748 mainly and some BL-C2 and WC846.

***UPDATE**** With the temp "soaring" to 43 degrees today I tested the rounds I loaded with 36.3 grains of LeverEvolution with Sierra 170 FN for the 30-30 Topper w/22" barrel.

My first shot was 2320 fps, second shot was 2296 and third shot was 2308. This averaged 2308 fps velocity. Accuracy was the same as the original test groups. I would suspect the pressure curve was hit right around the 36.3 grain mark during Hodgdon's testing and my F1 Chrony reached the same conclusion velocity wise. I gained over 100 fps with a 3/10's increase in propellant. The Topper shows no signs of stress and pressure indicators were still in the neutral range. This may or may not be an accurate assessment of over pressure, but short of test equipment one never really knows. Outside of case shows no web expansion ring problems. I'll test the spent cases with the paper clip on the inside tonight.

The other theory might be that the temperature plays a role with this propellant. Could possibly be that loads worked up in cold weather shooting trials might be "hot" when fired in fair weather. I'll chronograph some velocities again with the temps in the 20 degree range.  Further shooting with this propellant to follow. So far I'm impressed.

I have always favored the 150 gn bullet as it shot faster and flater and always killed the deer.

I killed and watched killed many many whitetails with 170 corelocks. Never seen a need for another bullet. Ask my day though and he will tell you 150 win silver tips.

I have always favored the 150-grain Remington C-L for the 30-30, but after developing a fair load using 150-grain Hornady RN I like them along with the CL.

This is a 100-yard target, shot with a 30-30 Marlin, the top two holes with my Wal Mart special 150-grain Remington C-L.  I bought a number of boxes on sale.  The lower two are my reloads using the 150-grain Hornady RN.  This was shot using my old Weaver 4X.

At this point my load of choice was the 150-grain Remington C-L.  For years I have had a supply of 150 and 170 grain factory loads from Winchester, Federal, and Remington.  When I head out for a hunt the rifle was loaded with Remington C-L.

Most of the manufactures have the 30-30 bullet down pat.  I have recovered or been present when others have recovered 30-30 bullets from deer.  The Remington C-L always presents a classic mushroom with good weight retention.

This is a two load target with the Hornady LeveRelution 160-grain factory loaded ammunition at the top.  The high one was my doing because I did not know for sure where I was with the new ammunition.  After the shot I adjusted accordingly.  I bought six boxes of the factory loads and they will be my hunting load.  The bottom group is with my reloads, using the Hornady 150-grain RN.  This is a 100-yard target.  Either will do for deer but the 160-grain factory load extends the range.  I also replaced the old Weaver with a new Burris 2-7X scope.

The 30-30 is not difficult to reload but over the years I am aware of more failures with 30-30 reloads than any other round.  Looking back the majority of these involved first time reloaders.  The primary problem is failure to properly crimp bullet and no powder charge.

My old Lyman All-American 30-30 dies produce great reloads, and a fine roll crimp, but after visiting hundreds of deer camps and hearing the woes about bullet set back in a magazine or when the hunter drops a round I purchased a Lee Factory Crimp die for my 30-30 loads.

I agree, seems most of the flat nose bullets in .308 are designed for 30-30 velocities and work very well.  Last year I decided to try some lighter bullets in my 30-30s so I bought 500 Siera pro-hunter 125 gr hp bullets to try. I've had so many medical problems since then I haven't loaded any yet, but the guys on marlinowners sure recomend them. Now that I'm recovering from the stroke & 2 surgerys I'm plan to give them a try.  ;)

Thanks for a lot of experience here. I got side tracked with a couple pistol problems and mounting a couple scopes, Plan to make my order this weekend. I'm getting some bullets for the 30-30 and the 308. Both are new to me. A friend said he liked 125 Speer TNT for the 308 and thought of trying those in the 30-30 ??? Can't shoot deer here, so fun and GHs. Want some 150 prob. flat or round nosed bullets for 30-30 to play with, 170 not as flat shooting and more recoil. Both should kill a pig if I ever see one rooting around in the back yard. I'll read and re-read your experiences and make a couple choices. Also what's in stock at Midway. Have brass and a few IMR and Hodgdon powders. Thanks, looking forward to it.

pastorp, hope you are getting well enough to make a dent in those pro-hunters you have. I'm gonna look at those also ;)
Better Luck to You.

if yu want a fun light bullet, the 100 grn hornady short jackets are nice. they have been very accurate in my rifles. in fact extremely so.ive never hunted with them tho. the 125 grn hornady spire points also work well in my bolt action savage 340.they werk well in my marlin levers to but only 1 at a time.get a box of the short jakets and try them!they are fun plinkers.

Thanks guys, I'm feeling better than I have in years. But still a little tender where they cut my chest open. Doctor says I can do anything now that I feel like I want to but I'm just a little afraid of recoil right now.  ;D

I'll fell what makes a great plinking bullet and is cheap also...find you some 147gr military surplus full metal jackets. Your can find them for about $70/500. They shoot great in all my 30 caliber rifles. Just don't use them in the old lever gun!
