What Cannon is this?
« on: May 03, 2011, 05:16:04 PM »
Hello All,

While driving back from a rifle match this weekend.  I stopped at the Burgerking and sitting out front was this little piece of artillery.  Would anyone know anything about this?  The only marking s I could find was a LP on the left side trunnion, and a No 27 on the right trunnion.

Thanks,

Roger

RvA,

I would say it's a replica of a 3" Ordnance Rifle made by LaPan foundry.
If you make it idiot proof, then, someone will make a better idiot.

I was thinking a Confederate Napoleon.  Hope they put some paint on the carriage soon.

I'll say it is a 3" ordanance rifle as well .  ;)
I too wish they'd take better care of it !

Ask them what they want for , they must not think too much of it .

RvA,  Welcome!  This cannon looks familiar.  I think I seen photos of it before.  It appears to have seen better days. Thanks for posting the pics.  Dom

That IS a LaPan Foundry barrel (modern replica). Most of the carriage hardware parts were cast by LaPan also.

RvA,     Cat Whisperer posted a pic of this very same replica 3 years ago.  It was a night shot so the markings were not seen, I believe.  If you could tell us the name of the town where the Burger King was, then we would know for sure.

Anyone know how LaPan built this barrel?  Is it a cast iron shooter with a steel sleeve?  If it is, it seems a waste to see it sitting in front of a BK.

Dom, It was a shooter, cast around a half- inch liner.

Heck if they're just gonna let it rot like that, I'll buy it from them so they can buy a display rather than a shooter.

I wonder how rusted the sleeve is.   The barrel doesn't seem to have a plug at the muzzle.

Thanks, Cat Whisperer, you confirmed what I was only guessing.  But of those two locations in New Market, I picked the one with the 4400 in the phone number which I remembered, 540-740-4400, and called them to confirm that it was really there.  The very nice young lady I talked to said, "Yes Sir, it is.....right outside.  Ya'll come by an' visit!"  So, there you go, that's probably only the second replica we will ever want to see in the United States.  There is a 100 Pdr. Parrott Rifle at Fort Pulaski, Georgia.  It looked so real, when I first saw it in 2002, that I had to get up really close to find it to be a fiberglass replica.  The tip off was the fact that the fort employees had tied it to the original 1859 carriage with bright, zinc plated hose clamps.  I thought, that's really odd; why, for heavens sake, would you tie down a tube which should weigh about 9,800 lbs.? A simple rap on the trunnion end told the story.  It was hollow.  Further confirming it's replica nature, was the fact that it had two rear sight masses, one on the right, (Correct) and one the left, (Incorrect) rimbases.

Thanks, Tim.

I'll take more detailed pix next time through New Market.

Next scheduled trip for me is at the end of the month to shoot PD's in S.D., N.M. is North, not on the path West.

It looks wider on the left side as we face it, but the picture  was taken slightly left of center as we face it.  Distortion....?

From the pictures you can get a pretty good indication of the high quality of La Pan barrels. As I recall, none of his barrels were lathe turned on the outside. What you see is how they came from the molds. It appears that all of the different pieces of hardware that La Pan sold are mounted on this carriage. The rest are homemade or were apparently never installed. The barrel is mounted upside down but I bet it never had the vent drilled through.

Should we pass the hat and buy this for the Forum.....the climate in Montana is dry and would be more conducive to non destructive storage...I will volunteer my place for safe storage of the  forums cannon.  Please no accolades for my generosity.   ;D

DD,  Thanks for stepping up to the plate on this. In the winter you could store it in the living room with the dogs to keep it out of the snow. Thankyou for your generosity!    ;D
